Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and delivery of HVAC and mechanical systems for a variety of commercial building projects. This position will be responsible for mechanical design from initial concept through construction administration, including load calculations, system and equipment selection, design coordination, construction documents, and project deliverables. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will collaborate with internal design teams, architects, contractors, vendors, and clients while providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
Responsibilities
Lead the mechanical/HVAC design of commercial building projects from initial design through construction administration.
Perform HVAC load calculations and design, size, select, and schedule mechanical systems and equipment.
Design a variety of HVAC systems, including chilled and heating water systems, VRF/VRV, DX cooling, electric and gas heat, CV/VAV, DOAS, packaged systems, and other point-of-use HVAC systems.
Prepare mechanical system layouts, calculations, equipment selections, schedules, details, specifications, and other project documentation.
Coordinate mechanical designs with plumbing, electrical, architectural, structural, and other project disciplines.
Prepare Bluebeam markups and provide design direction to designers and CAD/Revit staff for development of construction documents.
Review designs for compliance with applicable building codes, energy codes, engineering standards, and local AHJ requirements.
Support plumbing system design and coordination as needed.
Manage assigned mechanical design responsibilities and deliverables to ensure projects remain on schedule.
Communicate and coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, vendors, and internal project teams throughout the design and construction process.
Support construction administration activities, including reviewing submittals and responding to RFIs.
Conduct occasional local site visits to assess existing conditions, verify design requirements, and support construction activities.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design staff.
Take ownership of assigned projects and ensure mechanical designs are completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
5+ years of mechanical/HVAC design engineering experience within the commercial built environment.
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an ABET-accredited program.
Prior experience working for an MEP consulting or A/E engineering firm.
Passed FE exam with the goal of obtaining PE licensure, or currently holds/is in the process of obtaining a PE license.
Extensive experience designing commercial building projects, including both small, quick-turnaround projects and larger projects with phased deliverables.
Strong knowledge of national building and energy codes, engineering standards, and applicable local AHJ requirements.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, vendors, and internal design teams.
Ability to independently take ownership of mechanical design projects from initial design through completion while meeting project schedules.
Technical Experience:
HVAC load calculations and system/equipment sizing, selection, scheduling, and detailing.
Chilled and heating water hydronic systems, VRF/VRV, DX cooling, electric and gas heat, CV/VAV, DOAS, packaged and built-up modular systems, and low- and medium-pressure duct systems.
Pressure drop calculations and HVAC design for varying climates and elevations, including high-altitude, cold, warm/humid, and arid environments.
Basic Sequences of Operation (SOO), stand-alone controls, or Building Automation Systems (BAS).
Smoke Control and Smoke Exhaust Systems exposure.
Fume and Particle Exhaust systems.
Trane TRACE load calculation software.
General plumbing system design.
COMcheck experience; exposure to FlaCom and CBECC/Title 24.
Bluebeam markups and coordination with CAD/Revit design teams.
AutoCAD and Revit exposure and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Construction Documents, Bidding, and Construction Administration processes, including RFIs and submittals.
