The Ranger Group, a premier engineering services firm, is currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the test engineering group of one of our large aerospace/defense clients in the Chicagoland area. This role is focused on the design of high-precision test fixtures used to support rigorous performance testing of complex mechanical components.
Key Responsibilities
- Fixture Design: Lead the design of custom, high-precision fixtures used to securely hold and position test articles for performance testing.
- Advanced Modeling: Utilize NX, Creo, and AutoCAD to develop detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
- Technical Documentation: Apply expert-level GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to ensure all machined parts meet strict tolerances and functional requirements.
- Structural Analysis: Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) as needed to validate fixture integrity under load.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with test engineers to understand test requirements and translate them into functional, repeatable fixture designs.
Required Skills & Experience
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
- Experience: 8+ years of professional experience in mechanical design, preferably within regulated industries (Aero/Defense or Medical Devices).
- GD&T Mastery: Deep understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing for complex machined parts.
- Fixture Design Expertise: Proven track record designing precision fixtures for test or manufacturing environments.
- Software Proficiency:
- Expertise in NX, Creo, and AutoCAD.
- FEA experience (ANSYS or equivalent) a plus.
