Sr. NOC Technician - IP Networking

Were looking for an experienced IP networking professional with strong routing and switching expertise who enjoys solving complex service provider network issues and wants to grow toward a Network Engineering career.

As a Sr. NOC Technician, you will be a part of a team that performs 24 x7 continuous Network monitoring of the Metronet DWDM, IP and Ethernet networks. We are looking for an experienced Network Operations professional with strong IP networking knowledge who can independently troubleshoot complex Layer 2 and Layer 3 network issues. This individual will serve as one of the teams technical leaders, partnering closely with Network Engineering and vendors to resolve advanced network problems while helping strengthen the NOCs IP expertise. Primary job functions typically require working independently, with some technical assistance from higher-level technicians, engineers, supervisors or Manager as needed.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in IP networking and routing and is approaching the skill level of a Network Engineer. They are comfortable working within routers, understanding end-to-end packet flow, troubleshooting Layer 2 and Layer 3 issues, and collaborating directly with equipment vendors to resolve complex network problems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Constant monitoring of Network Management systems for alarms and performance metrics on the METRONET Service Provider Network. Watching for potential security threats on the network and taking appropriate actions
  • Report, document, and track all alarm events while maintaining a high level of accuracy and urgency.
  • Logging and managing trouble tickets, assigning priorities, and updating ticket status with resolution details.
  • Identifying and responding to network alerts, troubleshooting issues, and taking corrective actions to minimize downtime. Communicate Network Event alerts and updates to internal Metronet teams and executives.
  • Analyzing network logs and system behavior to diagnose the root cause of network problems and implement solutions.
  • Elevating and Escalating issues to higher-level support teams and management when necessary.
  • Coordinate and drive repair activities on fiber cuts and other network impacting events.
  • Direct involvement with engineering groups and vendors to track and implement restoration efforts.
  • Communicates daily with many departments within METRONET, other telecommunication providers and vendors to discuss and coordinate all network troubles/outages and projects.
  • Perform and interpret industry standard tests such as RFC2544, y.1564, y.1731 and BER testing.
  • Provide 2nd level support for Tier 1 groups and work internal and external escalations to drive timely resolution efforts.
  • Troubleshoot complex IP routing and switching issues across the service provider network.
  • Investigate packet loss, packet storms, duplicate VLANs, duplicate IP addressing, routing anomalies, and Layer 2/Layer 3 network issues.
  • Work directly with equipment vendors including Cisco, Nokia, and Adtran to diagnose and resolve advanced technical issues.
  • Support engineering-level troubleshooting efforts while serving as the highest technical escalation point within the NOC.
  • Perform contact center duties in a high-volume environment.
  • Perform other duties assigned by NOC Management team

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or bachelor's degree preferred but not required. Vendor certifications preferred but not required. CCNA/ JNCIA/MEF/ALU Certifications a plus.
  • Key Competencies: Good computer and written/verbal communications skills, solving problems effectively, possess the ability - to take on new, demanding challenges, demonstrate the ability to assume new levels of responsibility and deal effectively with other people.
  • Professional attitude
  • Experience: 4 - 7 years of experience pertaining to the telecommunications industry. Strong preference for candidates with service provider networking experience supporting ISP, carrier, or telecommunications environments. Job specific Experience/training in either the Data or Transport Vertical as listed in the Technology Skill Matrix.

Technology Skill Matrix

A successful Sr. Network Technician should be proficient in 75% of the Data Skill, 75% of the Transport Skills or 60% of the total skills listed below.

  • DATA
  • Extensive experience with Ethernet/TCP/IP Networking. Must have detailed understanding of IEEE and ITU standards for FTTH & GPON technologies.
  • SNMP, UDP, IMAP, DNS, RADIUS (AAA), LDAP, NTP and SMTP
  • Ethernet and Mobile Backhaul Experience is a plus. Experience with PON/GPON based services is Desired
  • Experience working with MPLS and designing layer 2 and layer 3 private networks, including programming and testing VPN.
  • Ability to completely design, build, program, deploy, and document new IP services from a network core to multiple customer sites.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the OSI model and how it pertains to various transmission protocols, and multi-protocol routing including VRF, VPN, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, VPLS, and VPRN.

  • Transport

  • Ability to Move, Add, Change and Delete circuits in PON, GPON, DWDM and other Layer 1 transport systems

  • Intermediate PON, GPON, Dark Fiber, CWDM/DWDM experience

  • OTN, ROADM cross connect provisioning and signal grooming

  • Experience with various protection and switching methodologies such as G.8032

  • BTI, CISCO, CIENA, Ekinops Transport experience is Desired.

  • Ability to perform software and hardware upgrades as necessary in all Transport systems throughout Metronet Footprint

  • While experience in either the Data or Transport disciplines is valuable, this opening is primarily focused on candidates with strong IP networking, routing, and Ethernet experience.

  • Willingness to work as a team and independently.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position currently works Monday-Friday daytime business hours but the schedule may evolve based on business needs.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation is required.
  • Available to work overtime when deemed necessary, including holidays and weekends.
