Job Title: Senior Pharmacy TechnicianJob Description

The Senior Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacists by performing advanced technical functions and assisting with professional activities to ensure safe, accurate, and timely pharmaceutical services for patients, staff, and physicians. Working under the supervision of the pharmacist on duty, this role focuses on sterile and non-sterile compounding, medication preparation, and inventory management while serving as a resource and trainer for other pharmacy technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare parenteral products, including IV solutions, IVPBs, and TPN solutions, in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and in full compliance with USP 797, USP 800, and USP 795 standards.
  • Complete and maintain required competencies and compounding documentation to support ongoing compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Process printed medication orders and fulfill stock medication requests accurately and efficiently.
  • Assemble, process, and restock ambulance trays and code cart trays to ensure readiness and accuracy of emergency medications.
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and provide courteous, accurate information or assistance to internal and external customers.
  • Respond to and support requests at the customer service window, ensuring timely and professional service.
  • Return medications to appropriate storage areas, ensuring correct placement, labeling, and storage conditions.
  • Monitor medication par levels, reorder medications as needed, and restock controlled substances in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a resource for fundamental and compounding pharmacy technicians by providing guidance, answering questions, and supporting problem-solving.
  • Directly participate in training and onboarding of new pharmacy technicians, including demonstrating proper procedures and reinforcing best practices.
  • Perform additional Senior-level duties or special projects as requested by leadership, upon completion of necessary competencies.
  • Support a culture of safety, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the pharmacy by adhering to policies and participating in quality initiatives.

Essential Skills

  • Active Wisconsin pharmacy technician license or registration.
  • At least 2 years of pharmacy experience, including sterile compounding experience.
  • Demonstrated experience as a pharmacy technician with strong technical skills in medication preparation and handling.
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy practice, including sterile compounding, strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with USP 797, USP 800, and USP 795 standards and their application to sterile and non-sterile compounding.
  • Ability to prepare IV solutions, IVPBs, and TPNs accurately and safely.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in processing medication orders and managing inventory.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with pharmacists, technicians, physicians, nurses, and other staff.
  • Ability to train and mentor other pharmacy technicians and support a team-oriented environment.
  • PTCB certification strongly preferred at hire.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Pharmacy technician certificate or formal pharmacy technician training.
  • Experience with filling prescriptions and managing medication stock in a hospital or clinical setting.
  • Previous experience in both compounding and sterile compounding environments.
  • Demonstrated interest in professional growth within a structured pharmacy career ladder.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support additional projects or responsibilities as requested by leadership.

Work Environment

The role is based in a hospital or clinical pharmacy setting that supports both sterile and non-sterile compounding. Senior Pharmacy Technicians work varied shifts, with at least one opening at 64 hours over a two-week period, offering a mix of scheduling options. The environment includes cleanroom and compounding areas that adhere to USP 797, USP 800, and USP 795 standards, requiring consistent compliance with sterile technique and safety protocols. Team members use pharmacy automation, medication storage systems, and standard pharmacy equipment to prepare and manage medications. The culture emphasizes learning, collaboration, and advancement through a defined pharmacy career ladder, offering progression opportunities from Compound Pharmacy Technician to Sterile Compounding Technician, Senior Pharmacy Technician, and Sterile Products Technician Specialist.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Pleasant Prairie, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $24.50/hr.
