Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a Senior Plumbing Designer to lead the design and delivery of plumbing systems for a variety of commercial building projects. This position will be responsible for plumbing design from initial concept through construction administration, including system calculations, equipment sizing and selection, utility coordination, construction documents, and project deliverables. The Senior Plumbing Designer will collaborate with internal design teams, architects, contractors, vendors, and clients while providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
Responsibilities- Lead the plumbing design of commercial building projects from initial design through construction administration.
- Design domestic water, sanitary sewer, stormwater, and natural gas piping systems, including applicable calculations and demand schedules.
- Perform plumbing system and equipment sizing, selection, scheduling, and detailing.
- Design plumbing systems with appropriate freeze protection based on project and climate requirements.
- Coordinate plumbing designs with public utility providers and applicable local authorities.
- Design fire protection systems in accordance with project performance specifications.
- Support mechanical system design and coordination as needed.
- Prepare plumbing system layouts, calculations, equipment selections, schedules, details, specifications, and other project documentation.
- Coordinate plumbing designs with mechanical, electrical, architectural, structural, and other project disciplines.
- Prepare Bluebeam markups and provide design direction to CAD/Revit staff for development of construction documents.
- Review designs for compliance with applicable plumbing and building codes, engineering standards, and local AHJ requirements.
- Manage assigned plumbing design responsibilities and deliverables to ensure projects remain on schedule.
- Communicate and coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, vendors, utility providers, and internal project teams throughout the design and construction process.
- Support construction administration activities, including reviewing submittals and responding to RFIs.
- Conduct occasional local site visits to assess existing conditions, verify design requirements, and support construction activities.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and staff.
- Take ownership of assigned projects and ensure plumbing designs are completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:- 5+ years of plumbing design experience within the commercial built environment.
- Prior experience working for an MEP consulting or A/E engineering firm.
- Extensive experience designing plumbing systems for commercial building projects, including both small, quick-turnaround projects and larger projects with phased deliverables.
- Strong knowledge of national plumbing/building codes and standards and applicable local AHJ requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, vendors, utility providers, and internal design teams.
- Ability to independently lead plumbing design for assigned projects from initial design through completion while meeting project schedules.
Technical Experience:- Domestic water and sanitary sewer system design, calculations, and demand schedules.
- Stormwater system design and calculations.
- Natural gas piping design, calculations, and demand schedules.
- Plumbing system and equipment sizing, selection, scheduling, and detailing.
- Public utility coordination.
- Fire protection design based on project performance specifications.
- Plumbing design for freeze protection and varying project conditions.
- Bluebeam markups and coordination with CAD/Revit design teams.
- AutoCAD and Revit exposure and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Construction Documents, Bidding, and Construction Administration processes, including RFIs and submittals.
Preferred Qualifications:- Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD).
- Medical gas system design experience.
- Experience mentoring junior designers and staff.
