Registered Nurse (RN - Operating Room

UPMC Children's North Surgery Center | Full-Time | Daylight

Join the team at UPMC Children's North Surgery Center, where you'll play a vital role in delivering exceptional surgical care to pediatric patients in a state-of-the-art outpatient procedural setting. As an Operating Room Registered Nurse, you'll work alongside a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, providing one-on-one patient care throughout the surgical experience-from pre-operative preparation through the intraoperative phase and handoff to recovery.

This position offers a predictable daylight schedule (7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., primarily Monday through Friday with no call, weekends, nights, or holidays, supporting a strong work-life balance. Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a clinical resource and unit leader, providing expertise and guidance to the healthcare team.
  • Apply the nursing process and clinical judgment to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Develop and coordinate individualized plans of care in collaboration with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Communicate patient conditions, care needs, and recommendations effectively across the care team.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient documentation.
  • Demonstrate advanced assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Precept and mentor students, new graduates, and new staff.
  • Support evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Participate in shared governance, unit-based committees, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Promote a safe, professional, and collaborative work environment.
  • Perform duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Annual completion of one professional contribution approved by the Unit Director through UPMC's My Nursing Career Ladder program or applicable certification.
  • Certification is not required for nurses holding a Master's degree in Nursing or a DNP.
  • If a BSN is held, a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide age-appropriate patient care and apply principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
  • Ability to assess, interpret, and respond to patient needs based on age and clinical condition.
  • Must achieve and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on the Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with physicians, providers, leadership, staff, patients, and families.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex clinical environment while managing multiple priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Advanced clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead and support others in the application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required, including frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN licensure required in the state of practice or through an approved Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC multistate license.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR certification required in accordance with AHA standards within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 31, 33, 73, 34 clearances.
