Position Summary

The Crewing Specialist interacts with the senior officers on the ships and union representatives to ensure the vessels are manned in accordance with Company guidelines, collective bargaining agreement obligations and regulatory requirements

Functions & Duties

  • Work directly with labor union representatives to provide qualified crew members to the fleet in ports of call in the United States and in foreign countries. This task requires a working knowledge of Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Verify the domestic and international qualifications of the crew member prior to dispatch (i.e., Merchant Marine Credential, STCW certifications, TWIC, Passport & visa if necessary)
  • Data entry in crew member's NS 5 personnel file
  • Schedule & book crew member travel to and from the vessel. Coordinate crew member travel with vessel's Master, the crew member, the union representative, vessel's port agent.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the department's handbook and instructing senior officers on its content.
  • Process vessel's "Red Pouch"
  • Schedule and coordinate Cadet assignments with U.S. Maritime Academies
  • Participated in interviewing, selecting, on boarding and monitoring assignments & performance of the Shore side interns.
  • Coordinate the Company's random drug testing program with vessel Masters' and the third-party vendor as necessary.
  • Serve as the primary DER for AML's Drug & Alcohol program.
  • Act as the primary responder to union Plans' officials regarding compliance with Affordable Care Act reporting
  • Assist in Collective Bargaining negotiations.
  • Serve as certified Maritime Labor Convention auditor & crewing team subject matter expert.
  • Prepare agenda for and participate as a nonvoting member of the Human Resource Committee (HRC)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal and international maritime personnel regulatory requirements including Standards for Training and Watchkeeping Certification (STCW) & Maritime Labor Convention (MLC).
  • Knowledge of maritime union labor relations, policies, and procedures.
  • The ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance to support current or future military contracts.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent records management and record keeping skills necessary to manage over 1,000 staff and shipboard personnel records.
  • Team building skills necessary to work with union officials, shipboard personnel, and internal staff members at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to operate independently, including non-standard hours, under stressful conditions to meet hard deadlines/ship sailing schedules.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications including Word, Outlook, and Excel.

Qualifications

Required High School Diploma or GED

Preferred Bachelor's Degree

Work Experience

General Experience 3-5 years

Industry Experience 3-5 years • 2+ years of shipping experience preferrred

At American President Lines, we are committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The expected salary range for this position is $52,000 - $78,900 per year. The actual salary offered will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's qualifications, skills, experience, and location.

In addition to base salary, this position may be eligible for:
