    Job Description

Amazon"s Intermodal (AZIM) Network Optimization team is looking for a leader to join as a Senior Supply Chain Manager focused on identifying and executing opportunities to reduce cost, drive technology adoption, and improve automation across the intermodal network. This is a high-impact role responsible for translating complex supply chain data into actionable strategies that enhance network efficiency, eliminate waste, and accelerate operational excellence.

This role will own the end-to-end lifecycle of cost and process optimization initiatives - from identifying opportunities through data analysis and stakeholder input, to scoping solutions, driving implementation with technology and product partners, and measuring realized impact. The ideal candidate combines deep analytical capability with a builder"s mindset, is energized by ambiguity and the chance to create scalable mechanisms from scratch, and thrives in a fast-paced environment where data-driven decisions directly impact network cost, reliability, and speed.

    Key job responsibilities

Cost Optimization & Opportunity Identification Analyze intermodal cost drivers - line-haul, drayage, container repositioning, accessorials, and dwell - to identify and prioritize high-value savings opportunities. Build mechanisms to continuously size and track cost reduction initiatives across the network.

Technology & Automation Strategy Partner with Tech and Product teams to translate operational pain points into automation and tooling requirements. Scope solutions, write product briefs, and influence engineering prioritization to unlock scalable cost and efficiency gains.

Process Improvement & Mechanism Design Design and iterate on scorecards, automated workflows, and alerting systems that drive operational discipline, surface exceptions early, and reduce manual intervention.

Data-Driven Insights Conduct deep-dive analyses on network performance, cost trends, and operational inefficiencies to uncover root causes and recommend structural improvements. Build analytical frameworks that shift the team from reactive problem-solving to proactive opportunity capture.

Cross-Functional Partnership Collaborate with Strategic Sourcing, Finance, and Operations to align optimization efforts with broader network strategy and ensure recommendations are grounded in contractual and operational realities.

Reporting & Executive Communication Develop and present regular performance reviews to senior leadership, quantifying the impact of optimization initiatives and recommending next actions.

    A day in the life

You"ll start each morning reviewing network dashboards to spot cost outliers and inefficiencies across the intermodal network. From there, you"ll dig into data - sizing savings opportunities, scoping automation solutions, or pressure-testing initiatives already in flight. You"ll partner with Tech and Product to translate pain points into tooling requirements, sync with Finance on cost baselines, collaborate with Operations on execution constraints, and align with Strategic Sourcing on contractual realities. When you uncover high-value opportunities, you"ll build the business case and present recommendations to senior leadership. Your customers are the internal AZIM teams who depend on a cost-efficient, reliable intermodal network.

    About the team

Amazon Intermodal (AZIM) is Amazon"s internal intermodal transportation program, managing the movement of freight across the nation"s Class 1 railroad network. The team oversees rail strategy, carrier relationships, operational execution, and financial performance for one of Amazon"s most cost-efficient long-haul transportation modes. We partner closely with Strategic Sourcing, Drayage Operations, Security, and Finance to deliver reliable, secure, and cost-effective intermodal service at scale.

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
