Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) to lead and manage safety on construction projectswith emphasis on hospital and OSHPD-regulated work. The SSHO will implement and enforce the project Safety and Health Plan (SSHP), ensure compliance with OSHA and OSHPD rules, coordinate with hospital staff and contractors to protect patients, staff and workers, and maintain a safe, regulatory-compliant construction environment throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and maintain the project Site Safety and Health Plan (SSHP) and related safety documentation tailored to hospital/OSHPD requirements.
  • Perform daily site inspections and hazard assessments; identify corrective actions and ensure timely resolution.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and OSHPD regulations; serve as primary point of contact for OSHPD and other regulatory inspections.
  • Conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs), toolbox talks and daily safety briefings; maintain training and attendance records.
  • Investigate, document and report incidents, near misses and accidents; implement corrective and preventive measures and follow up on corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate with hospital infection control, facility management and clinical staff to minimize impacts to patients and operations during construction activities.
  • Monitor contractor and subcontractor safety performance; enforce site safety rules and stop-work authority when necessary.
  • Manage PPE programs, fall protection, confined space entry, hazardous materials handling and permit-required activities.
  • Maintain safety logs, inspection records, OSHA 300/300A records, training certifications and project safety files; prepare regular safety reports for project management.
  • Lead emergency response planning and drills for site-specific scenarios and coordinate any actual emergency response with on-site stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years experience in construction safety, including direct SSHO or site safety officer roles; hospital or OSHPD project experience strongly preferred.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required; additional OSHA and safety certifications (e.g., CHST, CSP) are a plus.
  • Proven knowledge of OSHPD requirements and working experience on healthcare facility projects, including ICRA/ infection control coordination.
  • Experience preparing and implementing Site Safety and Health Plans (SSHP), JHAs and safety procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, fall protection, confined space, HAZCOM, hazard assessment and incident investigation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to coordinate with contractors, hospital staff, regulators and project management.
  • Ability to maintain detailed safety documentation and deliver concise safety reports to leadership.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to travel to multiple project sites; willingness to wear required PPE and access all site areas as needed.
  • First Aid/CPR certification and familiarity with emergency response procedures preferred.
