Temporary Staff Accountant - Accounts Receivable

Location: Newark, NJ (100% Onsite - Monday through Friday)

Employment Type: Temporary

A well-established nonprofit organization in Newark is seeking a Staff Accountant - Accounts Receivable to join its Finance team on a temporary basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional with strong accounts receivable and revenue recognition experience who enjoys working in a mission-driven environment.

Nonprofit accounting experience is strongly preferred.

This position is fully onsite, five days per week, and offers the potential to transition into a permanent role for the right candidate.

Position Summary:

The Staff Accountant, Accounts Receivable is responsible for the accurate processing, recording, and reconciliation of earned and contributed revenue, as well as the management of accounts receivable. This role supports month-end and year-end close activities, prepares journal entries and reconciliations, monitors revenue activity, and helps ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working across multiple departments to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

Accounts Receivable

  • Maintain and reconcile accounts receivable for multiple departments.

  • Record invoices and ensure timely posting into the accounting system.

  • Apply incoming payments and maintain accurate customer account records.

  • Provide departments with regular reports on outstanding invoices and payments received.

Banking & Reconciliations

  • Prepare weekly bank deposits for cash and checks.

  • Process online donations and membership transactions.

  • Review daily banking activity and record deposits from various payment platforms.

  • Perform bank reconciliations and prepare related journal entries.

  • Support petty cash and change requests as needed.

Revenue Recognition

  • Process and record all organizational revenue accurately and timely.

  • Ensure revenue is properly recorded in donor and accounting systems.

  • Prepare journal entries related to revenue activity.

  • Coordinate with internal departments to track and reconcile revenue received from multiple sources, including online payment platforms, credit cards, wire transfers, memberships, donations, registrations, admissions, retail sales, and other revenue streams.

  • Assist in ensuring proper revenue recognition for restricted, unrestricted, institutional, and government funding.

Month-End & General Accounting

  • Assist with monthly and year-end closing activities.

  • Support annual audit preparation, including revenue testing and reconciliations.

  • Assist with investment reconciliations and other financial reporting as assigned.

  • Prepare sales tax summaries and related documentation.

  • Perform additional accounting duties as needed to support the Finance team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, with strong Accounts Receivable responsibilities.

  • Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred.

  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge, Altru, and/or Raiser's Edge is highly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of:

  • Accounts Receivable

  • Revenue Recognition

  • General Ledger

  • Month-End Close

  • Bank Reconciliations

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Collaborative team player with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Salary Range: $30/hr-$37/hr
