Job Summary
The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting operations and maintaining accurate, complete, and timely financial records for a healthcare organization. This role performs general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, month-end and year-end close activities, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
The Staff Accountant works closely with Finance, Billing, Revenue Cycle, Clinical Operations, Human Resources, and other administrative departments to ensure the accuracy of financial information, identify and resolve discrepancies, monitor financial performance, and support organizational goals. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, highly organized, and comfortable working with large volumes of financial data in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Financial Accounting
- Prepare, review, and post accurate journal entries, including accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, payroll, revenue, and other routine and non-routine transactions.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts to ensure completeness, accuracy, and proper classification of financial activity.
- Perform monthly bank, credit card, balance sheet, and other account reconciliations and investigate variances or unusual activity.
- Support accounting activities related to patient service revenue, insurance reimbursements, contractual adjustments, refunds, and other healthcare revenue streams.
- Develop an understanding of healthcare-specific financial processes, terminology, and reimbursement methodologies.
- Research and resolve discrepancies, errors, and reconciling items in a timely manner.
- Maintain appropriate supporting documentation for all accounting transactions and adjustments.
- Ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and organizational accounting policies.
Month-End & Year-End Close
- Support timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Prepare recurring and non-recurring journal entries and account analyses as part of the close process.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and follow up on outstanding items.
- Assist in preparing month-end financial packages and management reporting.
- Analyze actual results against budget, forecast, and prior-period results.
- Monitor healthcare-related revenue, expenses, departmental spending, and other key financial metrics.
- Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of the close process.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 2-4 years of accounting experience; healthcare accounting experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, lookups, data analysis, and reporting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify trends, discrepancies, and variances.
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and GAAP.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to analyze large volumes of financial data and communicate findings effectively.
- Experience with accounting/ERP systems.
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
