The Staff Accountant will play a key role in managing the day-to-day accounting functions for a portfolio of real estate assets and corporate entities. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial statements, performing account reconciliations, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. The ideal candidate has experience in property or real estate accounting and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare and post monthly journal entries and maintain general ledger accuracy.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations and balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Prepare monthly property and corporate financial statements.
- Reconcile tenant receivables, security deposits, and rent collections.
- Review and process accounts payable transactions, ensuring proper coding and approvals.
- Monitor cash activity and assist with treasury and cash management functions.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis activities.
- Prepare workpapers and supporting schedules for audits, tax filings, and lender reporting.
- Assist with operating expense reconciliations, CAM reconciliations, and tenant billings.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls.
- Partner with property managers and asset management teams to resolve accounting-related issues.
- Support special projects, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably within real estate, property management, or public accounting.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and general accounting principles.
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and financial analysis functions.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Preferred
- Real estate, property management, or real estate investment accounting experience.
- Experience with Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, Entrata, Sage Intacct, or similar accounting software.
- CPA designation or active pursuit of CPA certification.
- Experience preparing property-level financial statements and supporting annual audits.
