Role Overview: The Staff Accountant ensures the accuracy of the general ledger at Suffolk Credit Union. Post and reconciles activity and ensures timely and accurate financial reporting to internal and external contacts.
Responsibilities:
- Ensures compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and accurate financial reporting
- Reviews, reconciles, and posts general ledger activity
- Prepares daily, monthly, and quarterly financial reports
- Supports department operations and backs up staff as needed
- Maintains at least a satisfactory rating on audits and examinations
- Completes assigned duties to support overall credit union objectives
- Processes daily close-of-business files and A/P check clearing
- Posts and reconciles mortgage-related and loan disbursement activity
- Manages daily credit card posting and reconciliation
- Handles FHLB activity, loan accruals, and month-end close reconciliations
- Prepares key reports (delinquency, charge-offs, recoveries, business loans, etc.) and assists with 5300 reporting
- Supports special projects, loan charge-offs, and backup functions (fixed assets, ACH, participations as applicable)
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting (or equivalent work experience)
- Minimum 3 years of accounting experience, preferably in general ledger and financial institutions
- Strong knowledge of accounting theory, GAAP, and industry practices
- Understanding of financial services, including lending and collections
- Knowledge of credit union products, services, policies, and regulations
- Proficiency in accounting systems, financial analysis tools, and electronic platforms
- Advanced Excel and data analysis skills
- Strong communication skills, with ability to explain financial concepts clearly
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities effectively
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills
- High level of confidentiality and ability to work independently
