Regular Full Time Status: Exempt / SALARY Reports to: Legal Services Program Director

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (This is not an exhaustive list of all duties/responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned)

Legal Representation & Client Services

  • Provide direct legal representation to community members in a variety of civil legal matters, with a primary focus on:
  • Immigration law, including removal defense, adjustment of status, asylum, VAWA, U visas, T visas, and consular processing.
  • Family law, including protection orders, divorce, guardianship, and custody matters.
  • Contract law and landlord/tenant disputes.
  • Represent clients before local and federal courts, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, USCIS, the U.S. Department of State, and other government agencies.
  • Provide individual legal consultations, self-help assistance, and direct representation based on client need and case complexity.
  • Conduct naturalization preparation classes, legal clinics, and community workshops in Spanish and English.
  • Respond promptly to client inquiries and maintain clear communication throughout the representation.
  • Manage a caseload of matters in compliance with applicable rules of professional conduct and program standards

Supervision & Team Development

  • Supervise, train, and mentor Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representative(s) and paralegal staff.
  • Review and sign off on work product prepared by supervised staff in accordance with DOJ and bar requirements.
  • Participate in legal team meetings, case reviews, and staff training.
  • Assist in the onboarding and professional development of new legal staff.
  • Complete ongoing trauma-informed care training and required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses.

Outreach, Advocacy & Community Engagement

  • Conduct presentations, workshops, legal clinics, and individual consultations in Spanish and English across Idaho.
  • Travel across the state of Idaho to provide legal services and outreach in underserved communities.
  • Represent CC Idaho before legislators, policymakers, and other stakeholders on matters related to legal services and immigration policy, when requested by the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Collaborate with community partners, coalitions, and legal aid organizations across Idaho.
  • Contribute to CC Idaho blogs, social media, and outreach publications (FUILS and others) as needed.
  • Assist in planning and organizing annual community events, including the Annual Gala.

Program & Administrative Support

  • Assist in researching, writing, and reporting on grants that support the Legal Services program.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records for all cases and grant management activities in compliance with confidentiality standards and program requirements.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to grant reporting and program compliance requirements.
  • Manage deadlines, calendars, and case-related appointments to ensure timely filing and court appearances.
  • Perform all work duties in accordance with CC Idaho policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Ensure compliance with CC Idaho, local, state, federal, and other applicable regulations and professional standards.

Required

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school or able to obtain J.D. within six (6) months.
  • Active admission to the bar of any U.S. state; admission to the Idaho State Bar is strongly preferred or must be obtained within nine (9) months following hire.
  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights, public interest law, and the mission, vision, and values of Community Council of Idaho.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage a complex caseload.
  • Ability to work independently and to supervise, train, and support non-attorney legal staff.
  • Ability to multitask, manage time, meet deadlines, and remain calm and professional under pressure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including legal writing and oral advocacy.
  • Experience with legal case management systems and electronic filing platforms.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional responsibility rules.
  • Ability to travel frequently and overnight, both in-state and out-of-state.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of current auto insurance.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.

Preferred

  • Fluency in English and Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking) in a professional business setting.
  • Must complete the Core Grammar Program within 6 months of hire.
  • 1-3 years of experience in immigration law, family law, or public interest legal services.
  • Experience supervising DOJ-accredited representatives or paralegals.
  • Familiarity with grant writing, reporting, or nonprofit program management.
  • Experience working with immigrant, refugee, or survivor populations.
  • Familiarity with Idaho state courts, USCIS procedures, and 9th Circuit practice.

Required Physical Demands

  • Is frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment

Work in an office or classroom setting; may be exposed to electrical shock and fumes or airborne particles; the work may be stressful; the noise level is moderate to elevated.
