Staff Development RN / Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as both the Staff Development Coordinator and Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), assisting in the planning, organization, development, and direction of the Nursing Department while overseeing staff education, orientation, training, and competency programs. This position ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and supports the delivery of high-quality resident care.
Key Responsibilities
Staff Development & Education
- Develop, implement, and maintain an annual staff development and education program for nursing personnel.
- Coordinate and conduct General Orientation and Job-Specific Orientation for all newly hired nursing staff.
- Serve as a preceptor, mentor, and resource to newly hired employees throughout the orientation process.
- Plan, coordinate, and conduct mandatory in-services, continuing education programs, and competency validations.
- Assess ongoing educational needs and develop training programs to address identified opportunities.
- Maintain accurate records of staff education, attendance, competencies, certifications, and licensure requirements.
- Assist with survey preparedness and provide education related to regulatory compliance and quality improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate demonstrations and training on new equipment, policies, procedures, and clinical practices.
Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) Responsibilities
- Assist the Director of Nursing in overseeing the daily operations of the Nursing Department.
- Support staffing, scheduling, employee performance management, and employee development initiatives.
- Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
- Assist with investigations, incident follow-up, and implementation of corrective action plans.
- Monitor compliance with facility policies, infection prevention practices, and clinical standards of care.
- Provide clinical leadership and guidance to nursing staff.
- Participate in care planning and interdisciplinary team meetings as needed.
- Assume responsibility for nursing operations in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and facility regulations.
- Assist with preparation for state surveys and regulatory inspections.
- Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.
- Monitor nursing competencies and ensure clinical standards are maintained.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
- Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state.
- BSN preferred.
- CPR Certification required.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing leadership experience in a skilled nursing facility or long-term care setting preferred.
- Previous experience in staff development, education, or training strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of long-term care regulations, survey process, and clinical nursing practices.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and coaching skills.
