Summary:

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, documenting, and

evaluating all educational programs, including on-the-job training for the Nursing Department. Plays a key

role in the assimilation of all new employees in the facility and assures nursing competencies are completed

timely and thoroughly and that any necessary follow up is completed.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Schedules mandated in-services on a monthly and annual basis. Secures appropriate and qualified

trainers as necessary.

  • Develops and adds in-service topics based on facility need/interest to monthly and annual

calendars.

  • Coordinates with all department heads to ensure employee participation at mandated inservices.
  • Assures mandatory in-servicing is completed timely and documented in accordance with State and

Federal Regulations and accreditation requirements.

  • Coordinates orientation of all new employees to meet State and Federal requirements and

expectations of BHCS education department.

  • Communicates the assimilation status of all new employees in the facility to the administrator and

appropriate department head/manager.

  • Uses protective/safety equipment and interventions in accordance with facility policy and OSHA

standards. Teaches good practices to facility staff and promotes a culture of safety.

  • Acts as a resource person for all facility staff in regard to personnel educational needs (i.e.,

infection control, abuse prevention, sensitivity, etc.).

  • Keeps records of attendance at in-services for all staff to ensure compliance with facility

policies and State and Federal Regulations. Assures a check and balance system for

monitoring where you are at compared to annual calendar of education and required

mandatory in-servicing.

  • Coordinates competency testing yearly for nursing staff with input/assistance
  • from nursing management as needed focusing on return demonstration to determine competency

as often as possible.

  • Displays the ability to provide coaching to assure ongoing competency and professional

development.

  • Implements the career ladder paths (Stepping Stones) in coordination with the facility management

team and the BHCS Education Department.

  • Coordinates, supports and follows employees involved in the Stepping Stone Programs and other

educational initiatives.

  • Attends educational in-services to maintain licensure and broaden your knowledge base.

Encourages/influences staff to take advantage of educational programs. Educates staff

regarding what CEU programs are available to them. Maintains current CPR certification.

  • Assumes any duties that are assigned by the Administrator in order to provide optimal

achievable quality resident care and in meeting regulatory compliance.

  • Participates in meetings as assigned by administrator such as but not limited to QI,

Department Head Meetings, Nurse Management Meetings.

  • Understands and upholds the Residents Bill of Rights and holds all resident information

confidential. Understands employee rights in accordance with HIPAA and holds all

employee information confidential.

  • Maintains acceptable level of attendance in accordance to the facility policy and has the flexibility

with work schedule to assure education is provided on all three shifts and weekends as needed.

  • Maintains a professional appearance and mannerisms according to established facility standards.
  • Discusses any problems with the appropriate department head and administration.
  • Understands and adheres to all safety, infection control, sanitation, accident, fire, accident, disaster

and personnel policies and procedures of the facility.

  • Performs other duties as needed or as assigned by the administrator.
  • Assumes responsibility of promoting and maintaining positive employee relations and effective

communication among facility staff.

  • Makes efforts to recognize employees, educate and trains employees, and promotes employee

growth in an effort to increase employee retention and satisfaction.

  • Engages in the rounding for outcomes strategy with staff, residents and families in an effort to

assess whether there are unmet needs/desires, recognize staff for a job well done, or coaches staff

as appropriate.

  • Displays a polite, courteous manner towards fellow employees, visitors and residents at all times.

Qualifications:

  • RN strongly preferred. Maintains current nursing license in accordance with state regulations.
  • Five years Long Term care experience preferred.
  • 2-3 years of nursing management experience preferred. Acute hospital medical/surgical

experience desirable.

  • Knowledge of the educational needs of all the departments in long term care.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, local regulations and JCAHO accreditation requirements as they

pertain to certification, licensing, and training.

  • Hold and maintain current CPR certification in accordance with Nursing Standards of Practice.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret the programs, goals and objectives,

policies and procedures, etc. of the education department.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, in writing, as well as verbally.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients/residents, family members,

visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws,

regulations and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.

  • Must be willing to work harmoniously with professionals and non-professional personnel.
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to

handle difficult patients/residents as well as difficult situations with staff.

  • Must have basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Will meet all physical requirements of the position as identified by the facility policies and procedures

related to functional job analysis.
