Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Chief Public Defender, performs investigations as necessary to support the legal representation of clients. Under the attorney’s direction, an investigator will interview witnesses, visit the scenes where incidents take place, and otherwise conduct investigations that would inform such representation.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The primary job duties and responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  1. Investigate the facts and circumstances of the alleged crime by gathering documentary evidence and interviewing witnesses.
  2. Consult with attorneys to support legal defense for both felony and misdemeanor cases.
  3. Conduct research, collect records, prepare reports, locate witnesses, conduct interviews, conduct background/criminal history searches and serve subpoenas.
  4. Organize and prioritize caseload, manage calendar in order to complete work in a timely and efficient manner.
  5. Review and synthesize case materials, providing well-organized, clear information to attorneys.
  6. Lead Investigator is responsible for maintaining investigator files and keeps track of the active investigations to confirm thoroughness and completion.
  7. Performs other duties as required.

Job Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • Must be licensed as a Private Investigator with the State of Michigan and provide valid proof.
  • If not licensed, then must have proper documentation submitted to LARA (Licensing and Regulation Affairs) no later than 90 days into their 6-month probationary period of employment.
  • Must be fully licensed as a Private Investigator prior to the end of their 6-month probationary period from the date of hire. Failure to obtain Private Investigators license will result in termination of employment at the end of probationary period.
  • Must have prior Private Investigator or Law Enforcement background.
  • Must meet all the requirements for qualification as a private investigator with LARA (Licensing and Regulation Affairs) for the State of Michigan.
  • Must have valid CPL License.
  • Must be able to handle multiple project workloads and periods of high stress, especially during times of peak business demand.
  • Must be well organized with the ability to deliver fast and accurate turnaround times.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing, databases, spreadsheet and presentation software applications for the creation and compilation of various documents, communications and reports. Ability to use the Internet and e-mail.
  • Possess a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Familiarity with investigation techniques and tools such as databases, informational resources and public records, general concepts of criminal law and arrest procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to work with a diverse group of county personnel and citizens.
  • Minimum of three years of interviewing, research, and writing experience.

Working Conditions

This position works in a normal office environment that may be affected by occasional discomfort due to cold, heat, dust, and noise. Occasional travel may be required between County building locations, crime scenes, business locations and private residences for interviews. Extended workdays may be required occasionally. Occasional lifting of office supply boxes may be required.

 

Physical Requirements
