The Castings Manufacturing Engineering Group is the part of the Materials Engineering Group responsible for the design, build, launch and handover of state of the art Casting lines and equipment currently used for vehicle and humanoid programs. This team is focusing on achieving the highest efficiency, manufacturing volume and safety while proving performance and documenting every aspect of the project for handover to sustaining.
In this role, you'll need strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience designing load-bearing structures. You will be responsible for designing complex structures such as casting and furnace access platforms, crane support structures, overhead conveyance support, piping systems, robot mounting, and other structures that support equipment and provide maintenance access.
As the structural lead, you'll take full responsibility for validating your own designs and those of others to ensure they meet all performance, safety, and applicable code requirements while provididing expert guidance to team members and external vendors to enhance overall performance and reduce costs
Lead structural designs, define applicable standards and requirements, bid package development, vendor selection, lead vendor design reviews, oversee fabrication, acceptance testing standards and visits, coordinate required building utilities, structure and equipment installation, including a high level of cross collaboration with teams such as Facilities, Construction, Environmental, Operations, Maintenance and other Tesla manufacturing groups
Perform calculations for loads and stresses considering code requirements and equipment static and dynamic worst-case loading
Design custom structures as needed, providing supporting design validation analysis (FMEA, FEA, etc.) and detailed build to print models/drawings for fabrication
Manage 3D and 2D structural CAD designs in Revit, AutoCAD, Siemens NX and SolidWorks
Manage data including CAD library creation for standard components, fab and assembly drawings
Support the creation of detailed 3D CAD layouts used to locate equipment, support utilities, and create utility routings
Oversee technical and schedule performance of equipment suppliers following Tesla standards
Manage structural design documentation
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or similar, or equivalent experience
5+ years of experience designing load bearing structures in 2D and 3D CAD (SolidWorks/Revit/AutoCAD or similar)
Knowledge of ISO Safety Standards for risk assessment and safety of machinery preferred
Proficient in ACI 318-14 (concrete provisions), ASCE 7-16 (design loads), IBC, and AISC 360-16 (steel design)
Strong knowledge of materials and failure modes
Experience in simulation to validate design meets operational requirements
Experience in fatigue analysis to evaluate highly dynamic loading
Proven project management experience of $1M+ capex projects with cost benefit analysis development
Strong verbal and written communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
Professional Engineer (PE) license in Texas preferred
