A large industrial manufacturing operation in the Midwest is seeking an experienced Staff Mechanical Engineer to support a sheet finishing and downstream processing environment. This role focuses on mechanical system integration, capital project execution, and continuous improvement initiatives that support safety, reliability, quality, and production performance.

The position is suited for an engineer who is comfortable owning projects end‑to‑end while partnering closely with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams.

Job Details

The Staff Mechanical Engineer provides mechanical engineering leadership for assigned production areas, supporting both sustaining and new capital projects. This role is responsible for improving manufacturing infrastructure, integrating mechanical systems, and leading problem solving efforts related to equipment performance, safety, and process capability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan and execute mechanical engineering projects using structured project management tools
  • Manage projects from concept and scope development through design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and close‑out
  • Develop written specifications, safety reviews, bid packages, and project documentation
  • Manage and coordinate external vendors, contractors, and service providers
  • Lead tactical projects focused on safety improvements, infrastructure reliability, training, and production performance
  • Support and lead structured problem solving efforts for equipment and process improvements
  • Partner with maintenance and operations to improve equipment availability and maintainability
  • Contribute to development of project business cases, justifications, and approval requests
  • Support department safety, quality, and compliance requirements
  • Communicate project status, risks, and outcomes to technical and non‑technical stakeholders

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical engineering experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Experience developing project justifications and approval documentation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with common office, scheduling, and project management tools
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10 or more years of experience supporting manufacturing processes, particularly metals or heavy industry
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and utility systems
  • Experience integrating mechanical systems into existing manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with reliability and maintainability principles, metrics, and analysis
  • Proven ability to lead and deliver mechanical engineering projects
  • Strong analytical and practical problem solving skills
