Staff Mechanical Engineer Tech Lead

At WHOOP, we are on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers users to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives.

WHOOP is looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer Tech Lead to lead critical design validation and development execution for next generation biometric wearable products. You are a proactive, highly organized engineer with strong problem-solving skills and a sharp eye for detail. You thrive in a fast-paced execution-driven setting and can drive creative mechanical design solutions with independence and sound technical judgement. You will mentor junior mechanical engineers and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including Electrical Engineering, Embedded Engineering, Manufacturing, Product and Program Management. You will work closely with our suppliers and contract manufacturers around the world to execute engineering validation builds with a focus on high quality deliverables, sharp engineering risk management, clear technical communication upwards and externally, and commitment to product excellence.

WHOOP operates with urgency because our mission demands it. We build products for people who push their limits-and we hold ourselves to the same standard. If you are energized by complex challenges, cross-functional collaboration, and the opportunity to ship hardware at scale, this role will push you-and reward you.

Responsibilities

Complete technical ownership at system level of a next generation product from design concept to manufacturing release, ensuring performance, reliability, cost, and schedule targets are met.

Lead mechanical design analysis and development of mechanical components around micro-electronics and exact industrial design visions and specifications, product requirements, and manufacturing constraints.

Create SolidWorks CAD models to bring up design concepts that enable simulation exercises, prototyping, and mass production qualification.

Generate technical documentation, such as 3D files, 2D drawings, bills of material (BOMs), and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), following product development cycle timeline.

Communicate and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams to align requirements, drive decisions, and resolve issues quickly.

Drive organized end-to-end Design for Manufacturability (DFM) coordination across multiple vendors and manufacturing methods, aligning requirements, timelines, and technical decisions to deliver scalable, high-yield production.

Partner with suppliers to explore and carry multiple material and design concepts in parallel.

Communicate engineering changes to vendors and contract manufacturers as the product development cycle progresses.

Design testing protocols and validation plans, managing testing processes.

Perform thorough engineering root cause analyses to identify and resolve issues.

Mentorship and engineering best practices.

Willingness to travel internationally up to 20% of the time.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 10 years of experience in the design documentation and validation of complex mechanical parts for medium to high volume consumer electronics
  • 5 years of SolidWorks CAD experience with best practices for part design, feature architecture, advanced assemblies, complex configuration management, and integrating DFx feedback efficiently
  • 5 years of experience implementing CAE tools in mechanical design process, including finite element analysis (Static and Dynamic) and thermal simulation
  • 5 years of working with Tier 1 and 2 contract manufacturers in Asia and North America
  • Extensive experience in mechanical design concepts and the manufacture of products utilizing high volume automated manufacturing processes, as well as manual assembly
  • Played a key role in the launch of 3 products, thorough understanding of full product development process, experience guiding suppliers, and product lifecycle management
  • Well-versed in design prototyping and evaluation of advanced injection molded plastic components, die castings, metal injection molding, ceramic injection molding, packaging, and material selection
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma statistical methods and how to apply them effectively to make design decisions, ability to utilize statistical methods such as RSS tolerance stack up analysis and CPK process capability
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well within teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and proposals to leadership upwards, internally, and externally to suppliers and contact manufacturers
  • Familiarity with mechanical design concepts and the manufacture of products utilizing high volume automated manufacturing processes, as well as manual assembly, with experience in high volume injection molding strongly preferred
  • Highly organized and methodical, able to create structure plans and risk mitigation for open-ended problems and drive them to closure
