As a Staff Engineer, Packaging in our R&D function within the Spine division, you'll play a critical leadership role on the packaging team—designing, developing, and optimizing sterile and non-sterile packaging solutions that ensure medical devices reach the operating room safely, compliantly, and cost-effectively.What You'll Do:Lead the development and management of packaging procedures, design rules, and guidelines that balance performance, cost, and reliability for both sterile and non-sterile medical device packagingCreate advanced packaging designs from concept through final release, including detailed CAD documentation (SolidWorks or Creo) for primary, secondary, and tertiary packagingDevelop and maintain component specifications for all packaging levels and lead the design, execution, and analysis of packaging testing protocolsPartner closely with product development engineering teams to define optimal packaging solutions while managing multiple projects to meet aggressive timelinesDesign and validate cases and trays for transportation and terminal sterilization of non-sterile devices intended for hospital useIdentify viable primary packaging options, develop secondary shipment packaging, and support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiativesWrite and contribute to risk management documentation (e.g., DFMEA, PFMEA) related to packaging in coordination with cross-functional project teamsCollaborate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure designs are optimized, manufacturable, and seamlessly integrated with VB Spine operationsConduct value analysis, cost reduction activities, and stay current with emerging trends in packaging technology and materialsEstablish yourself as a thought leader in sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging while obtaining and maintaining relevant industry credentialsWhat You Bring:Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Quality Engineering, or Microbiology required4+ years of hands-on experience in packaging design and development (medical device packaging strongly preferred)2+ years of experience creating packaging designs in CAD (SolidWorks or Creo preferred)Strong working knowledge of Quality System Regulation (QSR) and medical device packaging standardsStrategic thinker with excellent technical communication, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skillsHighly detail-oriented, personally driven, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environmentAbility to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and work effectively in an office/lab setting with frequent use of hands for design and testing activitiesWhy VB Spine?We believe in growing talent from within.
