Job Summary

The Specialty Clinical Pharmacist provides comprehensive clinical pharmacy services across multiple specialty areas, in UCDH Specialty Clinics. Areas of coverage may include Dermatology and Gastroenterology (and other Immunology Clinics), Neurology, Pediatrics, and other specialties as assigned. This role supports patient care through medication therapy management, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based pharmacotherapy. A Specialty Clinical Pharmacist adapts to varying clinical settings, assists with transitions of care, supports protocol development, provides education to healthcare professionals and patients, and ensures compliance with institutional, regulatory, and accreditation standards. As a staff pharmacist, they are an integral member of the health care team, responsible for drug therapy monitoring, distribution, drug information, and precepting pharmacy students and residents, conducting clinical research, participating in Department and Hospital Committees, task forces and work groups and fostering excellent interdepartmental relationships. #CA-DS

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

• California Pharmacist License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire
• American Heart Associate (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR at time of hire
• Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience/training
• Completion of a Pharmacy Practice Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) residency, or 3 years of equivalent experience
• Computer skills that facilitate clinical patient data medication order entry and other basic clinical software programs, including and not limited to documenting pharmacist activities in the electronic medical record
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with and educate patients about their medication therapy
• Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English
• Knowledge of current ambulatory care guidelines (i.e., NCEP, JNC, ADA)
• Demonstrated ability to identify medication-related problems in patients, communicate them to a patient's physician and offer recommendations
• Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise
• Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached

Preferred Qualifications

• Pharmacist Board Certification, [e.g., Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS), Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP), or Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP)]
• Completion of a Pharmacy Practice Post Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) residency, or 5 years of equivalent experience
• Ability to work with and direct residents and students
• Ability to work with and direct health care professionals
• Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties
• Ability to oversee technicians and establish workflow priorities for daily patient care

Department Overview

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
