Job Summary:

Piano for Young People is a pre-college piano program for students kindergarten through high school. Students pursue piano study through private lessons in a university setting. Materials covered in lessons include sight reading, music theory, music history, ear training, and an introduction to a wide range of musical genres and styles of the teacher and student’s choosing. Staff teachers in Piano for Young People are responsible for teaching weekly lessons on campus, planning and preparing for individualized lessons, sending weekly assignments and reminders to students and parents, meeting with the director as needed, and regular correspondence. Staff teachers also attend recitals and competition events throughout the academic year. Staff teachers are committed to professional development and growth in knowledge of pedagogical practices.

Job Description:

Teaching
Teaches weekly individualized piano lessons to students ages five and older, including sight reading, music
theory, music history, ear training, technique, and repertoire. Creates and fosters relationships with students
and families. Teaches in person and virtually as required by the program and university.

Planning
Prepares weekly for lessons through communication with students and parents, writing weekly assignments,
and coordinating with the director. Pursues professional development to stay knowledgeable of pedagogical
practices. Performs other duties as assigned by the director.

Recitals & Events
Prepares students for and attends recitals and other performances throughout the academic year.

Communication
Communicates regularly with students/parents, director, and others.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Music, Piano, or Piano Pedagogy.

  • Prior teaching experience

Preferred Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Knowledge of pedagogical practices, piano method books, and sequencing instruction

  • Adept at working with children

  • Adaptable and open to trying new pedagogical methods

  • Proficient and comfortable with virtual lessons and digital communication
