ABOUT THE COMPANY
Our client is a high-growth, AI-native technology company based in New York City. The team builds and ships with AI at the center of how it works: its strongest engineers run multiple coding agents in autonomous workflows. The company is looking for a Staff-level builder to set the technical direction of high-value products from their earliest stages.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a Staff engineering role for someone who is deeply hands-on. You will personally design, build, and launch products from zero to one, make the major architectural calls, and lead through influence rather than management authority. The role is not simply systems-building: you will care about product quality, user experience, customer needs, and the technical trade-offs that connect them.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Take high-value products from 0 to 1: define the problem, design the architecture, build, launch, and own them in production.
Set or materially shape technical direction and make significant architectural decisions as a senior individual contributor.
Build full-stack product features and systems, with TypeScript and React as the core of your work.
Work in an AI-native way: use coding agents in autonomous workflows and ship applied AI where it improves the product.
Keep the customer in view: weigh UX, product quality, and customer needs against technical trade-offs.
Explain technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to engineers, leadership, and non-technical stakeholders.
Operate with ambiguity and radical ownership and help raise the bar for the engineers around you.
WHAT YOU BRING
Experience: 7 to 20 years as a full-stack or product engineer, with meaningful end-to-end product ownership at a Staff level.
Proven 0-to-1 ownership: You personally designed, built, and deployed exceptional products from the early stages in a high-growth startup or scale-up with a strong engineering organization. You can explain what you owned, what you built, the technical decisions you made, and what happened to the product afterward.
Strong full-stack fundamentals: Hands-on TypeScript and React expertise, plus depth across the rest of the stack.
Technical leadership as an IC: A track record of setting or shaping technical direction, making significant architectural decisions, and leading through influence while staying hands-on.
Applied AI or coding-agent experience: Specific examples of applied AI work, or substantive use of coding agents that changed how you build. Occasional use of an AI assistant is not enough.
Product and customer orientation: Experience leading the technical direction of recognizable, high-value products, with real attention to customer experience.
Clear communication: You can explain complex decisions and trade-offs pragmatically to any audience.
Location: Based in NYC, or genuinely willing to relocate and work in person five days a week.
NICE TO HAVE
Experience ata developer tools or infrastructure startup, building products for engineers.
THIS ROLE IS NOT A FIT IF
Your background is primarily infrastructure, DevOps, SRE, platform, or backend-only work without strong TypeScript and React product engineering.
Your experience is mainly maintaining or optimizing established products rather than owning 0-to-1 builds.
You are looking for a remote or hybrid role.
