Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and technically capable Staff Professional Geologist who is eager to continue building a meaningful career in environmental consulting. This role is designed for an early-career professional with 2–5 years of experience who has developed foundational environmental consulting skills and is ready to take on increasing technical responsibility while continuing to grow under the guidance of experienced geologists and project managers.

The Staff Professional Geologist will support a variety of environmental projects with a focus on groundwater compliance, environmental investigations, field data collection, technical reporting, and project execution. This position provides exposure to diverse projects across environmental, civil, geotechnical, geostructural, and construction materials testing disciplines while working alongside experienced technical professionals.

The successful candidate will perform field investigations, evaluate environmental data, prepare technical documentation, support project coordination, and assist with client deliverables while maintaining BLE’s commitment to technical excellence, quality, and professional service.

The position is intentionally designed to provide continued technical development and career progression, with approximately 60% office-based technical work and up to 40% fieldwork supporting active projects.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience supporting environmental consulting projects or related geological/environmental work.
  • Experience performing environmental field investigations, including groundwater, soil, surface water, and sediment sampling activities.
  • Experience collecting, documenting, and evaluating environmental field data.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, memoranda, plans, specifications, proposals, and other project documentation.
  • Working knowledge of geological and hydrogeological principles, including groundwater flow concepts and contaminant migration pathways.
  • Experience interpreting laboratory analytical data and assisting with evaluation of environmental results.
  • Familiarity with applicable environmental regulations and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Ability to obtain professional licensure within an appropriate timeframe.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to authorize driving record review.
  • Ability to travel throughout the Southeastern United States (up to 20%).

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Investigation & Field Activities

  • Conduct environmental field investigations including groundwater, soil, surface water, and sediment sampling.
  • Perform groundwater monitoring activities including water level measurements, field parameter collection, sample collection, and documentation.
  • Assist with groundwater compliance activities and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Observe and document monitoring well and methane probe installations.
  • Log and classify soil and rock materials and assist with interpretation of subsurface conditions.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate field documentation, including:
    • Field logs
    • Chain-of-custody forms
    • Daily reports
    • Equipment calibration records
    • Quality assurance documentation
  • Maintain compliance with project-specific health and safety requirements.

Technical Reporting & Data Evaluation

  • Prepare technical reports, memoranda, plans, specifications, and proposals.
  • Review and interpret laboratory analytical data and assist with statistical evaluation of environmental results.
  • Evaluate environmental data to identify trends, potential concerns, and data gaps.
  • Prepare geologic maps, cross-sections, site figures, and technical illustrations.
  • Assist with preparation of:
    • Assessment reports
    • Corrective Action Plans (CAPs)
    • Regulatory correspondence
    • Environmental documentation
  • Support senior technical staff with interpretation of geological and hydrogeological conditions.

Client Relationship Management

  • Develop an understanding of client objectives, expectations, and project requirements.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, contractors, regulatory personnel, and project stakeholders.
  • Provide clear updates regarding project status, field activities, technical findings, and data under the direction of Project Managers and Senior Geologists.
  • Demonstrate responsiveness, professionalism, and commitment to maintaining strong client relationships.

Quality Control and Assurance

  • Adhere to BLE and project-specific quality control procedures.
  • Review field documentation, analytical data, and technical deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain accurate records necessary to support technically sound and defensible project deliverables.
  • Identify potential data issues, inconsistencies, or project concerns and communicate findings to project leadership.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to technical quality and project execution.

Project Planning and Scheduling

  • Support the development of project work plans, schedules, and field activities.
  • Assist with task planning, resource coordination, and project execution.
  • Track assigned responsibilities against project schedules and communicate potential delays or challenges.
  • Complete assigned project responsibilities with increasing independence while maintaining communication with project leadership.
  • Assist with proposal preparation, technical task planning, and project documentation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of geologists, engineers, scientists, project managers, and technical specialists.
  • Collaborate across BLE service lines including environmental, geotechnical, geostructural, and construction materials testing teams.
  • Contribute technical knowledge and field experience to support project objectives.
  • Work independently while maintaining effective communication with supervisors and team members.

Performance Analytics

  • Maintain accurate time tracking and project documentation.
  • Develop an understanding of project budgets, utilization expectations, and the relationship between technical execution and project profitability.
  • Monitor assigned tasks to ensure work is completed efficiently and within project requirements.
  • Understand key performance indicators related to project efficiency, quality, and client service.

Working Conditions

  • Field assignments require working outdoors in variable weather conditions and various site environments.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
  • Ability to work around active construction sites, environmental investigation areas, and other field conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks associated with field activities.
  • Ability to operate field equipment and perform repetitive field activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and environmental data management tools.
