Chewy is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for our fast-paced customer-first Sponsored Ads team. This role is instrumental in launching innovative customer-facing products crafted to delight and engage Chewys advertising partners while scaling our advertising technology and strengthening brand partnerships. As a senior member of the team, youll help craft, build, and deliver intuitive, performant, and scalable Display ads experiences that power ad creation, campaign management, creative tools, and performance reporting across Chewys digital ecosystem.
Sponsored Ads at Chewy builds a state-of-the-art ads platform - offering pet parents relevant product options and deals while enabling brand partners to improve transparency and reach through targeted placements. Advertising is a fast-growing, strategically important component of Chewys e-commerce platform and a key driver of incremental revenue.
In this role, youll demonstrate your deep expertise in Ads serving technologies, large-scale engineering systems, to lead the development of engaging web experiences for both advertisers and pet-parents as Chewy shoppers. As an early member of the team, youll be part of shaping the technical strategy, owning core areas of the system architecture, and influencing the user experience across Chewys retail media platform and advertiser portal. You will also help lead the team through ambiguous technical decisions and play a critical role in establishing front-end engineering processes.
This position presents a chance to drive a new initiative at Chewys ads platform, growing business value in a rapidly expanding sector of the company.
What Youll Do
• You will participate in working with all of the top engineers at Chewy and other partner technology teams to evolve architecture direction of all development at Chewy. • You will have responsibility over major components of Chewys architecture - both development and operational needs. You will be the go-to engineer for your part of the platform. • You will be responsible for ensuring your systems are fully CICD and have responsibility of a plan to get to CICD if not there yet. • Limiting technical debt will be your key objective. • Hiring, training, mentoring, and growing new talent will be a major part of your job as Chewy is growing all teams at a record pace. • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development. • Conduct design and code reviews and improve on engineering rigor and standard. • Debug production issues across services and tech stack. • Continuously measure and optimize the performance effectiveness and uptime of backend services. • You will participate in setting guidelines for evolving development practices as well as mentoring junior engineers.
What Youll Need
• Bachelors Degree in MIS or CS preferred or equivalent work experience. • 10+ years of experience in an object-oriented language such as Java and relevant Java ecosystem like Spring Boot-based applications. • Prior experience in Display ads engineering systems will be a huge plus. • Be a Hands-on Staff technical engineering lead who can work with technical stakeholders, product managers, data scientists, and help evolve the technical roadmap of this new display ads-initiatives. • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full software development process, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations. • Proficiency in Computer Science fundamentals - object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm, design, problem-solving, and complexity analysis. • Experience with designing, building, and deploying scalable, highly available systems. • Experience with cloud & orchestration technologies, AWS Services, Terraform, Ansible, etc. • Have or more importantly be willing to learn deep domain knowledge in the area of retail e-commerce. • Position may require travel.
Bonus
• Experience in e-commerce display ads engineering systems. • Experience with Scrum XP or other agile methodologies a plus. • Good communication skills with both technical and business audiences. • Experience with data analysis, mining in large-scale database environments a plus.

Salary and Benefits
The base salary range for this role is $166,000 - $265,500. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the candidates relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401(k) and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08 positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

Exempt Salary Team Members
Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
