Position Summary

The Startup & Commissioning Technician is responsible for the installation support, startup, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of pumps, motors, mechanical equipment, and related systems at customer facilities. This position ensures equipment is properly installed, aligned, tested, operated, and documented before being placed into service.

The technician will work closely with customers, contractors, engineers, project managers, electricians, mechanics, and DXP personnel to identify and resolve startup issues and ensure equipment performs according to manufacturer specifications and project requirements.

 

This position is a key field-service role responsible for ensuring DXP Pacific equipment is properly installed, safely started, fully commissioned, and ready for reliable operation

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform startup and commissioning of centrifugal, vertical, end-suction, split-case, vertical turbine, and other pump systems.
  • Verify proper installation of pumps, motors, couplings, baseplates, piping, valves, lubrication systems, and associated equipment.
  • Inspect equipment prior to startup and identify installation deficiencies or potential operating issues.
  • Verify motor rotation, voltage, amperage, phase balance, and operating conditions.
  • Record startup readings including:
  • Voltage
  • Amperage
  • Motor operating conditions
  • Suction and discharge pressure
  • Flow
  • Bearing temperatures
  • Vibration
  • Lubrication levels and conditions
  • Pump speed and operating parameters
  • Perform pump and motor alignment checks and adjustments as required.
  • Verify lubrication systems, cooling systems, seal systems, and auxiliary equipment are functioning properly.
  • Conduct operational testing under actual or simulated operating conditions.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational problems during startup.
  • Identify hydraulically overloaded, improperly installed, misaligned, or improperly operated equipment.
  • Assist with control system and instrumentation checks related to pump and motor operation.
  • Perform loop checks and verify proper operation of applicable instrumentation and controls.
  • Work with electricians and controls technicians to troubleshoot motor, starter, VFD, PLC, and control-related issues.
  • Verify equipment operation against approved specifications, performance requirements, and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Make recommendations for corrective action when equipment does not perform as expected.
  • Communicate startup issues and required corrective actions to customers, contractors, project managers, and DXP management.
  • Complete detailed startup, commissioning, inspection, and service reports.
  • Document final operating conditions and equipment readings for customer records.
  • Provide customers with basic equipment operation and maintenance information when required.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with customers and represent DXP Pacific in a professional manner.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures, OSHA requirements, customer safety requirements, and DXP policies.
  • Maintain company tools, test equipment, vehicles, and personal protective equipment.
  • Travel to customer sites as required, including occasional overnight and extended-duration assignments.
  • Perform other duties related to field service, equipment startup, and commissioning as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working with pumps, motors, rotating equipment, industrial equipment, or related mechanical systems.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Working knowledge of centrifugal pumps and industrial pumping systems.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, pump curves, equipment manuals, and basic electrical diagrams.
  • Ability to use electrical test equipment such as multimeters and clamp meters.
  • Ability to take and accurately document equipment operating readings.
  • Ability to identify abnormal equipment conditions such as excessive vibration, overheating, abnormal noise, high amperage, improper rotation, leakage, and hydraulic problems.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers and coworkers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial pump manufacturers such as Flowserve, KSB, Goulds, Durco, Gorman-Rupp, and similar equipment.
  • Experience with vertical and horizontal motors.
  • Experience with VFDs, motor starters, PLCs, and basic controls.
  • Experience performing shaft and coupling alignment.
  • Experience using vibration meters and other predictive-maintenance equipment.
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience.
  • Mechanical or industrial maintenance experience.
  • Factory training or manufacturer certifications.
  • OSHA, NFPA, confined-space, lockout/tagout, or other applicable safety training.

The successful Startup & Commissioning Technician will be expected to:

  • Complete startups safely and efficiently.

  • Identify problems before equipment is placed into service.
  • Minimize equipment downtime and unnecessary service calls.
  • Provide professional customer service.
  • Maintain a high standard of workmanship.
  • Communicate issues clearly and promptly.
  • Represent DXP Pacific professionally at all customer locations.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and on time.

Additional Information:

Pay: $30.00hr - $42.00hr, DOE

Physical Demand: Ability to lift and carry tools and equipment, to work around rotating machinery, electrical equipment, pumps, motors, piping, and industrial environments, to climb ladders, work from elevated platforms, and work in confined or difficult-to-access areas when properly trained and authorized; to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods; to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions; and to wear required PPE for extended periods.

Working Conditions: The technician may be exposed to noise, heat, cold, dust, chemicals, moving equipment, electrical hazards, elevated work areas, and other industrial conditions. Strict adherence to safety procedures is required.

Travel:  This position is primarily field-based and requires travel to customer facilities, industrial plants, water and wastewater facilities, manufacturing facilities, and other job sites. 

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
