    Steel Erection Ironworker

    The Steel Erection Ironworker is responsible for safely assembling, erecting, connecting, and installing structural steel and architectural metal components-including stairs, railings, ladders, and canopies-on commercial construction projects, while accurately interpreting blueprints and applying rigging and welding skills to meet all project specifications and safety standards.

    Key Responsibilities

    Layout & Preparation

    • Read and interpret blueprints, erection drawings, and shop details to determine layout, dimensions, and installation requirements.
    • Mark reference points and prepare materials and tools for installation.
    • Verify field dimensions and conditions before setting steel or miscellaneous metals.

    Structural Steel & Pre-Engineered Metal Building Installation

    • Erect, align, and connect structural steel columns, beams, and bracing using cranes, rigging, and bolting or welding methods.
    • Verify alignment, elevation, and fit of components using levels, lasers, and plumb bobs.
    • Perform cutting, drilling, and grinding as needed for proper fit and connections.
    • Install metal roofing, metal siding, and insulation as part of pre-engineered metal building packages following all required details and specifications.

    Miscellaneous Metals Installation

    • Install stairs, handrails, guardrails, lintels, embeds, ladders, canopies, and ornamental steel components.
    • Fit, weld, or bolt connections in accordance with project drawings and tolerances.
    • Ensure finished components meet aesthetic and functional requirements.

    Safety and Compliance

    • Maintain compliance with all company and OSHA safety policies, including use of fall protection and PPE.
    • Participate in daily safety meetings and assist in job hazard analysis.
    • Coordinate with crane operators, riggers, and other trades to ensure safe and efficient lifts and installations.

    Quality Control and Maintenance

    • Inspect all work for alignment, accuracy, and quality before completion.
    • Maintain tools, equipment, and materials in good working condition.
    • Report material shortages, equipment defects, or site hazards to supervision.

    Blueprint & Plan Interpretation

    • Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, steel erection drawings, PEMB plans, and specifications
    • Translate plans into actionable tasks for the team
    • Identify discrepancies or conflicts in documents and coordinate resolutions

    Teamwork

    • Work collaboratively with a crew of ironworkers to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
    • Communicate clearly with foremen, operators, and other trades to coordinate work.
    • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced ironworkers and apprentices on proper techniques, safety procedures, and quality standards.
    • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.

    Must-Have Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Minimum 2+ years of experience in commercial and/or industrial steel construction
    • Strong working knowledge and experience in commercial and industrial interior and exterior steel erection and metal component installation including structural steel erection, metal building erection, decking installation, stairs, railings, metal siding, metal roofing, welding, etc
    • D1.1 certification from the American Welding Society or willingness to obtain.
    • Ability to use specialized surveying equipment for layout and quality control tasks.
    • Rigging, decking, chemical anchors, and/or certifications are required.
    • OSHA 30 certification (or willingness to obtain)
    • Reliable transportation to and from job sites
    • Strong leadership, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
    • Physical ability to perform manual labor and work in outdoor conditions as well as working from elevated work platforms and ladders from various heights.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of multiple construction disciplines including but not limited to: sitework, masonry, demolition, plumbing, electric, or other construction specialties as they interface with steel components and their installation
    • Familiarity with local building codes and regulations
