Job Description

Join Hilo Benioff Medical Center and be part of a team that proudly cares for our friends, family, and neighbors across East Hawaii.

Job Description

We are seeking a Sterile Processing Supervisor I or II to lead a critical function that directly supports safe, high-quality surgical care for our community. In this role, you will oversee the systems, staff, and standards that ensure surgical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized, available, and ready—enabling clinical teams to deliver exceptional patient outcomes. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a mission-driven, regional healthcare system serving East Hawai‘i.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, supervise, and develop Sterile Processing staff, including technicians, leads, and OR aides, ensuring high performance, competency, and adherence to best practices.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee daily sterile processing operations, including decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Design and manage the surgical case cart system, aligning with surgeon preference cards and operating room schedules to ensure timely and accurate case readiness.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor quality assurance and infection control programs to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and continuous process improvement.
  • Oversee inventory management, including supply levels, cycle counts, ordering, and identification of cost-saving opportunities in collaboration with vendors.
  • Serve as a key liaison to Surgical Services, proactively anticipating and meeting the needs of surgeons and clinical teams while supporting efficient workflow and patient care.

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a sterile processing department supporting surgical services, including demonstrated expertise in decontamination, sterilization, instrumentation, and aseptic technique.
  • Required for the II level: One (1) year of supervisory experience, including planning, assigning, reviewing work, and training staff.

Certification: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through IAHCSMM or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through CBSPD required at time of hire.

Substitutions:

  • Completion of a nationally certified Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technician training program (or equivalent) may substitute for up to one (1) year of required specialized experience.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a science-related field (e.g., biology, human anatomy, physics) from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to six (6) months of required work experience.

Preferred Skills: Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation across specialties (e.g., general, orthopedic, OB/GYN, endoscopic), infection control principles, and aseptic technique. Ability to lead in a fast-paced environment, communicate effectively, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

This position is compensated with a Hire Above the Minimum agreement.
