Job Title: Sterile Processing Technician
Specialty: Sterile Processing Service (SPS) decontamination, sterilization, inspection, assembly, and distribution of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME)
Site: VA New Jersey Healthcare System East Orange Campus
Location: 385 Tremont Avenue, East Orange, NJ 07018
Duration: 1 year contract with the possibility of 4 more years
Pay rate: $25/hr on W2
Shift Schedule:
- Tour 1: 7:30 AM 4:00 PM (Mon Fri)
- Tour 2: 11:00 AM 7:30 PM (Mon Fri)
- Tour 3: 3:30 PM 12:00 AM (Mon Fri)
How Many Shifts Needed per Month: All 3 tours covered 5 days/week (Mon Fri) approximately 22 shifts per tour per month (66 total shifts/month across all 3 positions), excluding 11 observed federal holidays (no holiday pay authorized)
Credentialing/Onboarding Time: 6 8 weeks
License: Any valid state license accepted (no state-specific restriction noted)
Certifications: Must meet ONE of the following:
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), OR
- Certified through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), OR
- Graduate of a recognized CRCST/Tech program + 2 years SPS experience, OR
- VA Level 1 Certification + 2 years SPS experience (Level 1 cert must be completed within 90 days of start), OR
- 5+ years of verifiable hands-on SPS experience (non-certified)
- BLS Certification required
Education: Per certification pathway above (formal SPS/CRCST program or equivalent)
Experience Needed: 2 5+ years, depending on certification pathway
Special Skills Needed:
- Proficiency in sterilization/HLD methods (Steam, Sterrad, VPRO, Medivator, Trophon, Cidex OPA)
- Cleaning, inspecting, assembling, and storing surgical instruments and RMD
- Biological/chemical testing, Bowie-Dick testing, QA documentation
- Experience across surgical specialties (General, GYN, Ortho, ENT, Urology, Vascular, Dental, Robotics, Podiatry)
- Flexible endoscope reprocessing per manufacturer IFUs
- Knowledge of asepsis, microbiology, and infection control principles
- Instrument Tracking System proficiency (Censitrac)
- Physical capability: lifting, standing, pushing carts; work in hot/humid/loud environments in PPE
- Valid driver's license (for travel to other sites as needed)
- Fluent English (speak/read/write)
Responsibilities:
- Perform all decontamination, sterilization, inspection, assembly, and distribution of RME
- Conduct biological/chemical indicator monitoring and documentation
- Support quality improvement activities and committee meetings as required
- Complete required continuing education (12+ in-services/year) and VA TMS mandatory modules
- Sign in/out via Outlook and timesheets within 10 minutes of arrival/departure; log daily case counts
- Comply with VA infection control, safety, and patient privacy standards
- Report incidents via the Patient Safety Reporting System
