Responsibilities

  • Perform daily observations of animals to assess health status, behavior, and overall condition, and promptly report any changes in animals or their environment.
  • Conduct environmental monitoring and complete all associated documentation accurately and on time.
  • Change and clean cages, racks, equipment, water bottles, and food containers according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Unpack and house animals upon arrival, ensuring proper identification, placement, and acclimation to their new environment.
  • Carry out janitorial maintenance of facility rooms, including routine cleaning and organization to maintain a sanitary and orderly work area.
  • Stock and restock supplies such as bedding, food, water bottles, and cleaning materials to ensure continuous availability.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on animal facility equipment and supplies, following standard operating procedures.
  • Conduct monthly sanitization of equipment and the facility to maintain high standards of cleanliness and biosecurity.
  • Maintain accurate records of animals, supplies, and equipment, including inventory tracking and documentation of husbandry activities.
  • Follow basic standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory safety guidelines while performing all tasks.
  • Collaborate with a team of animal care staff to support smooth daily operations and ensure consistent care across all vivarium areas.
  • Remain flexible to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required for essential animal care coverage.

Essential Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent technical certificate.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in animal care is helpful for this position.
  • Demonstrated experience in animal husbandry, including routine care, feeding, and monitoring of animals.
  • Ability to perform cleaning and sterilization tasks for cages, equipment, and facility areas.
  • Familiarity with cage wash operations and husbandry procedures.
  • Ability to follow basic standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory safety practices.
  • Capability to work effectively as part of a team of 10-12 colleagues on a shift.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, as well as weekends and holidays, as part of essential personnel coverage.

Work Environment

This role is based in a vivarium setting within a large research campus that operates multiple animal facilities, each with its own dedicated team.

The Animal Care Technician typically works with a team of 10-12 colleagues on the first shift. Standard hours are Monday through Friday for an 8-hour shift, with start times as early as 5:00 a.m. The position is classified as essential personnel, so weekend and holiday work is required, and flexibility for overtime is expected to ensure continuous animal care.

The work involves regular interaction with mice, use of cage wash systems, and adherence to laboratory safety procedures and standard operating protocols. The campus environment offers on-site amenities such as a gym and cafeteria, and there are plans for a fully staffed daycare within five years. The organization is in a significant expansion phase, creating strong opportunities for growth and internal promotion for Animal Care Technicians.

Benefits for full-time employees may include stock options or equity, bonuses, restricted stock units, and retirement savings with a matching contribution, while contract employees may receive accrued vacation and sick time along with paid company-observed holidays.
