Position Overview

Stand-By Personnel is seeking a Stick Welder Helper for a night-shift fabrication opportunity in Claremore. This position supports welding and fabrication operations involving Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), material preparation, fit-up, grinding, cutting, inspection, and general shop work.

The ideal candidate has previous Stick welding or fabrication experience and is comfortable working with carbon steel, stainless steel, and structural components. Candidates should understand basic welding techniques, joint preparation, and weld symbols while being willing to assist with a variety of fabrication responsibilities.

Required Experience & Skills

• Previous Stick / SMAW welding or related fabrication experience
• Basic knowledge of welding techniques and joint preparation
• Basic understanding of weld symbols
• Ability to safely use welding and fabrication equipment
• Ability to read and follow basic drawings and instructions
• Experience preparing materials for welding
• Ability to safely use grinders and basic hand tools
• Strong attention to quality and safety
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Reliable attendance and strong work ethic  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist with Stick / SMAW welding and fabrication activities
• Support fabrication of metal components and structures
• Work with carbon steel, stainless steel, and structural components
• Assist with welding equipment setup
• Prepare materials and workpieces before welding
• Clean and grind weld areas
• Cut materials as required
• Fit and position components to prepare proper weld joints
• Follow written and verbal fabrication instructions
• Assist with inspecting completed welds
• Use basic measuring tools to verify completed work
• Identify visible welding or fabrication defects
• Assist with repair or rework activities as required
• Safely operate grinders, cutting torches, saws, and hand tools
• Maintain clean and organized work areas
• Properly store tools, materials, and equipment
• Communicate production or quality concerns to supervisors
• Support Welders and fabrication personnel with daily production needs
• Follow all company safety and PPE requirements
• Perform additional fabrication and shop duties as assigned  

Stick Welding Support

Candidates may work alongside experienced Welders performing or assisting with:

• Stick / SMAW welding
• Welding machine setup
• Electrode preparation
• Lead and clamp setup
• Joint preparation
• Tack welding
• Component fit-up
• Weld cleanup
• Weld inspection
• Weld repair and rework  

Candidates should have enough welding knowledge to safely support skilled fabrication work while continuing to develop their abilities.

Material Preparation & Fit-Up

• Clean materials before welding
• Grind surfaces as required
• Cut components to prepare joints
• Position and align materials
• Assist with fitting components
• Verify basic measurements
• Prepare joints for welding
• Make adjustments as directed
• Help prepare assemblies for final welding  

Tools & Equipment

Candidates may regularly work with:

• Stick / SMAW welding equipment
• Welding leads and clamps
• Electrodes
• Grinders
• Cutting torches
• Saws
• Tape measures
• Squares
• Gauges
• Basic hand and fabrication tools  

Blueprints, Measurements & Instructions

Candidates should be able to:

• Follow basic fabrication drawings
• Understand written work instructions
• Follow verbal supervisor direction
• Recognize basic weld symbols
• Use a tape measure
• Use squares and basic gauges
• Follow specified measurements and tolerances  

Quality Responsibilities

• Inspect work for visible defects
• Maintain attention to weld and fabrication quality
• Verify basic measurements
• Identify work requiring correction
• Assist with repairs and rework
• Communicate quality concerns promptly
• Follow established company workmanship standards  

Preferred Qualifications

• Stick / SMAW welding experience
• Structural welding experience
• Pipe welding experience
• Manufacturing experience
• Industrial fabrication experience
• Construction welding experience
• Heavy equipment repair experience
• Carbon steel experience
• Stainless steel experience
• Cutting torch experience
• Strong grinder skills
• Previous industrial or fabrication shop experience  

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods throughout the shift
• Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, positioning, pushing, and pulling
• Ability to handle metal components and fabrication materials
• Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required for welding and fabrication work
• Ability to safely operate grinders, cutting equipment, and hand tools
• Comfortable performing physically demanding shop work
• Ability to safely work around welding equipment, sparks, heat, metal, and industrial machinery
• Ability to wear all required PPE  

Safety & PPE

Candidates must follow all applicable shop and welding safety procedures, including proper use of:

• Welding helmet when applicable
• Gloves
• Safety glasses
• Protective clothing
• Required footwear
• Additional PPE as assigned  

Work Environment

• Industrial manufacturing and fabrication environment
• Regular work around Welders, fabricated metal, welding machines, grinders, cutting torches, and saws
• Hands-on position combining welding support, material preparation, fit-up, grinding, cutting, and general fabrication
• Consistent 5:00 PM – 3:30 AM night-shift schedule
• Strong emphasis on safety, quality, productivity, teamwork, and dependable attendance
