The STIR (Students Taking Initiative and Responsibility) Coordinator provides early intervention, recovery support, and referral services to students engaged in high-risk substance use behaviors or seeking recovery from substance use disorders. This position utilizes evidence-based approaches, including Motivational Interviewing (MI), Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), and recovery coaching to promote student well-being, academic success, and healthy decision-making. The STIR Coordinator works collaboratively with campus and community partners to provide comprehensive case management, continuity of care, and support services tailored to the needs of students.

Primary Duties

  • Provide brief motivational interviewing interventions, BASICS services, and referrals to students engaged in high-risk substance use behaviors or seeking recovery support.
  • Deliver recovery coaching, case management, and follow-up services, including scheduling appointments, documenting progress, and connecting students with appropriate resources.
  • Utilize trauma-informed, student-centered, and non-judgmental approaches to support student well-being and behavior change.
  • Coordinate continuity of care by collaborating with campus and community partners, including Student Advocacy, Student Conduct, Counseling and Psychiatry Services, Title IX, and community treatment providers.
  • Serve as a liaison between Healthy Carolina and key stakeholders to address student wellness, recovery, and support needs.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through the review of student feedback, assessment data, and campus trends, and implement improvements to enhance service delivery.
  • Support alcohol and other drug prevention initiatives and represent the STIR program on university, Student Health and Well-Being, and professional committees.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters in Social Work, Public Health, Counseling, Higher Education or related field
  • Experience using Motivational Interviewing
  • Experience with brief screening and intervention strategies (e.g. BASICS) or recovery coaching
  • Experience in higher education setting, or working with young adults
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substance use, behavior change theories, and trauma-informed practices
  • Ability to provide services from a non-judgmental perspective

Pending graduates eligible if candidate receives their degree by date of employment

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of alcohol and other drug prevention theory, current research and evaluation practices.
  • Demonstrated skills in using Motivational Interviewing.
