Position Information

New Hanover County is looking for a Stormwater Maintenance Worker to join the Stormwater Services Division of the Engineering Department. This position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining stormwater drainage systems through semi-skilled manual labor and use of various hand tools and power equipment. Other duties include: performing preventative maintenance on tools and equipment; transporting and operating heavy equipment, such as backhoes and excavators; Driving county vehicles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs); Using hand tools such as chainsaws, winches, shovels, and other hand and power tools; Performing landscape and waterway clearance work such as: removing debris, cutting felled trees for removal, removing excess mud and/or sand from waterways, and cutting branches, among other clearance work; Reporting to blocked waterways both reported by residents as well as identified by the Engineering Department; Occasionally using jon boats to cross deep waterways and/or working in standing water up to chest level; And performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

6:30 AM to 5:30 PM Monday - Thursday. Must be available to work during emergency situations. (Description of work hours does not apply in emergency situations)

Salary Information:

The hiring range for this position starts at $40,048. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Upon successful completion of all required certifications and training, and demonstrating proficiency on apparatus, equipment, tools, and processes necessary for the role, employees will be eligible for a 3% increase.

Candidates with an active CDL license may be hired at a higher zone, where the minimum salary is $41,249.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma/GED and one (1) year of work experience performing landscape and/or waterway clearance OR an equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, training, and experience.
  • Physical Requirements: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, and walking.

What will make your application stand out:
