Description

Location: Hybrid in the New York Metro area or fully remote

Compensation: $75,000–$95,000, depending on experience

We are seeking a hands-on and financially strong Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations within a growing technology services organization.

This person will serve as a trusted financial partner to the CEO and will be expected to understand the company’s financial position better than anyone else in the organization. The ideal candidate can manage the day-to-day accounting function while also using financial data to help leadership make informed decisions about growth, hiring, client profitability, budgeting, and future investments.

This role is best suited for someone who is comfortable working in the details but can also step back, understand the larger business picture, and clearly explain what the numbers mean.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Oversee general ledger activity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, payroll, reconciliations, collections, fixed assets, and sales and use tax.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, management reports, cash-flow reports, and variance analyses.
  • Serve as the CEO’s primary financial partner and provide clear recommendations based on the company’s financial performance.
  • Lead the annual company-wide budgeting process and partner with department leaders to create and manage individual departmental budgets.
  • Develop rolling forecasts and financial models to support hiring, staffing, operational planning, and company growth.
  • Evaluate the financial impact of new client opportunities, including projected revenue, profitability, cash flow, staffing requirements, and the available budget for additional hires.
  • Help leadership determine when the company can responsibly add headcount, make investments, or adjust spending.
  • Track company and departmental performance against budgets and forecasts and identify risks, opportunities, and needed adjustments.
  • Develop financial dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools that give leadership clear visibility into profitability, cash flow, expenses, margins, and business performance.
  • Support pricing decisions, commissions, incentives, and client profitability analysis.
  • Maintain and improve accounting policies, internal controls, workflows, and documentation.
  • Improve financial systems and processes to increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Coordinate audits, tax preparation, banking relationships, and other external financial partnerships.
  • Work closely with internal leadership and outside financial partners to ensure accurate reporting and alignment.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and full-cycle accounting.
  • Experience serving as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Director of Finance, Accounting Manager, or similar finance leader.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow planning, and financial modeling.
  • Ability to analyze business opportunities and translate projected revenue into staffing, expense, and profitability recommendations.
  • Experience preparing company-wide and departmental budgets.
  • Strong understanding of financial statements and the ability to explain financial results clearly to non-finance leaders.
  • Experience owning month-end close and overseeing AP, AR, payroll, billing, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Strong process-improvement and internal-control experience.
  • Comfortable operating independently and taking ownership of the company’s financial accuracy.
  • Strong communication, organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in a growing, fast-moving, or service-based organization.
  • Experience in an MSP, technology services, professional services, or recurring-revenue business is preferred.

Systems Experience

  • Strong QuickBooks Online experience is required.
  • Bill.com and Expensify experience are highly preferred.
  • Experience with Excel and financial reporting, budgeting, or dashboard tools is expected.

What Success Looks Like

  • Leadership has clear and timely visibility into the company’s financial position.
  • The CEO has a trusted financial partner who can confidently explain performance, risks, and opportunities.
  • Company and departmental budgets are accurate, useful, and actively managed.
  • Hiring and growth decisions are supported by clear financial forecasts.
  • New client opportunities are evaluated based on revenue, staffing needs, margins, and cash-flow impact.
  • Month-end close is completed consistently, accurately, and on time.
  • Financial reporting helps leadership make better and faster business decisions.
  • Accounting processes and controls become more efficient, reliable, and scalable.

This Role Is a Good Fit If You

  • Enjoy being both hands-on and highly involved in business planning.
  • Want to serve as a true financial partner to a CEO.
  • Can move comfortably between detailed accounting work and forward-looking analysis.
  • Take ownership of the numbers and are confident making recommendations based on them.
  • Enjoy building structure and improving processes within a growing organization.
  • Can clearly explain complex financial information in practical business terms.
