General Description

This is entry level work in the operation of trucks and other specialized mechanical equipment, and the performance of heavy manual labor related to the cleaning, maintenance, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection, and repair of the City's storm and sanitary sewer systems with the City Engineering Division. Under direction, employees will perform a variety of laboring tasks, and operate related equipment as assigned. Work is typically subject to review, although employees are expected to exercise some judgment within established guidelines. Specific work assignments may vary based on the needs of the Division.

Employees generally become a Street and Sewer Machine Operator 1 after successfully completing 12 months as a Street and Sewer Maintenance Worker 1 within the Engineering Division. Qualified applicants who possess a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with a tanker vehicle (N) endorsement at the time of hire, may be hired immediately at the Street and Sewer Machine Operator 1 level. Movement to a Street and Sewer Machine Operator 2 and/or 3 is based on a competitive process and the needs of the department.

Candidates hired as Street and Sewer Maintenance Worker 1 start at $57,862.22 annually. Candidates hired as Street and Sewer Machine Operator 1 start at $60,392.28 annually.

Employees will start at Step 3 of the Salary Schedule. Employees will advance to Step 4 after successful completion of 30 months of employment and will advance to Step 5 after successful completion of 42 months of employment. Employees receive longevity pay starting with the fifth year of continuous permanent employment.

Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in the cleaning, maintenance, CCTV inspection, and repair of sanitary sewer and storm sewer facilities.

  • Assist with installation and maintain traffic control to provide a safe work zone.
  • Perform heavy manual labor associated with sewer cleaning, maintenance CCTV inspection, and structure repairs.
  • Remove and replace sanitary and storm access covers.
  • Check and monitor for potential hazardous atmospheres in trenches and structures.
  • Assist with set-up of cleaning and inspection equipment.
  • Operate motor vehicles, trucks and trailers to transport materials to job and disposal sites.
  • Operate multi-rear axle trucks and specialized equipment in a training capacity.
  • Assist with routine asphalt and concrete patching and finishing work.
  • Clean inlets, grates, greenways.

Perform building and grounds maintenance activities.

  • Perform landscape maintenance activities such as mowing, string trimming, hand weeding, litter collection, etc.
  • Perform tree and brush removal.
  • Perform snow and ice removal.
  • Perform routine building maintenance and cleaning tasks.
  • Wash, clean, fuel and assist in performance of required maintenance of vehicles, equipment and tools.

Use computerized work order system to provide accurate and thorough work-related records.

  • Record daily work and inspection observations.
  • Maintain CDL inspection record as required.
  • Prepare and submit accident, incident and vehicle problem reports.

Miscellaneous

  • Maintain facilities, grounds, vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Collect and properly dispose of dead animals (other than deer) from public right-of-way.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, and removal of sewer sampling and flow monitoring equipment.
  • Assist property owners in resolving sewer-related problems.
  • Work cooperatively with other agencies and external customers.

Perform other related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid drivers license at the time of application.

  • After receiving a conditional offer of employment, the successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Wisconsin Department of Transportation testing process for a Class B Commercial Drivers License with tanker (N) endorsement before starting employment. Behind the wheel training will be provided on-the-job. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operators license within the twelve (12) month probationary period. Failure to obtain this license within the probation/trial period will result in the employee not passing probation/trial period, absent extenuating circumstances.

  • Ability to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled shift; includes nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Employees in this position are required to maintain a minimum overtime acceptance rate of 50% for emergency call-ins.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to perform a high percentage of work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to perform work in confined spaces, underground, in limited light conditions, and to frequently bend, twist, squat, climb, and reach for extended periods of time.

Leave

Employees earn 3.5 personal days in addition to vacation.
