Work involves performing tasks of a journeyman level in the installation, repair and maintenance of storm inlets and french drains, sidewalks, concrete curbs/gutters, driveway approaches, roadways, trees, guardrailing, as well as allother facilities in the public right-of-way or on other publicly owned property. Field work may be carried out without immediate supervision and persons in the classification may supervise a small group of utilitymen, laborers and other personnel in the field.
Distinguishing Characteristics Of Work
This is skilled work involving, but not limited to the installation, repair and maintenance of public right-of-way property and facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Streets or his designee. Field work may be carried out without immediate supervision and persons in the classification may supervise a small group of utilitymen, laborers and other personnel in the field.
Essential Examples Of Duties
- Installs, repairs, and maintains storm inlets and french drains.
- Installs, repairs and maintains public sidewalks, curbs and gutters, driveway approaches, trees, guardrails, roadways to include cutting, removing of all damaged area prior to repairs.
- Cleans and maintains all equipment used in the operation of the task assigned.
- Answers and responds to citizen complaints, determines cause of problem, and if the responsibility of the Division, corrects the situation or initiates proper work orders to resolve the situation.
- Operates and maintains various Street Division equipment including but not limited to: all trucks and vehicles, streets sweepers, drain cleaning trucks, tree truck (bucket & saw), grinders, saws, stump grinder, clipper, etc.
- Maintains complete and accurate records of work performed, time and equipment used in accordance with Division policy.
- Supervises the work of a small crew.
- Performs any related work in the Streets Division as required.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment employed in the Streets Division.
- Knowledge of the performance of various materials under a variety of conditions used in the Streets Division.
- Knowledge of hazards and all safety regulations involved in the trade.
- Ability to direct and supervise a small group of men in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
- Ability to work from drawings, plans, sketches and oral instruction.
- Skill in the use of tools and equipment, and the application techniques of the trade.
Physical Requirements
- Primarily office-based with occasional field visits to project sites or public infrastructure locations.
- Frequent interaction with the public, contractors, and internal staff.
- Work may involve deadlines tied to construction schedules, public safety concerns, or emergency responses.
- Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
- Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
- Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.
- Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.
Minimum Training And Experience
- Minimum of one (1) year experience as a utilityman or equivalent work experience.
- Possession of a Chauffer's License.
