Under the direct supervision of the Streets & Maintenance Department Manager, this position performs tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the City including; streets, storm drainage systems, parks, public buildings, the Soldotna Municipal Airport, sewer collection system, water supply storage and distribution systems, and other miscellaneous work as assigned. Work may be assigned on a shift basis. The position involves contact with the supervisor, fellow employees, contractors, and the public.

As a condition of employment with the City of Soldotna, applicable regulations require the City to verify through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse that the applicant's Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not in a prohibited status. Applicants with prior violations may be deemed ineligible for employment; unless they provide satisfactory documentation demonstrating successful completion of the Department of Transportation's Return-to-Duty process. Additionally, any offer of employment will be contingent upon the applicant receiving a negative result on a pre-employment drug test.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment involves frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Temperatures range from minus 55 degrees to plus 110 degrees. Employee may be exposed to significant levels of noise and vibration. Working in and around chemicals such as petroleum products, and salt is common. At times, employee may be required to work in confined spaces. Safety equipment will be provided to protect employee from hazards. Employee may be directed to operate heavy equipment for up to 14 hours per day.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position requires a moderate level of physical ability, including vision, hearing, speaking, flexibility, and strength. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to climb ladders and stairs; is required to perform general duties that may include, but not be limited to, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, dragging, and carrying; is required to use hands and fingers dexterously to operate power equipment, is required to exert (often lifting) up to 70 pounds of force frequently. The employee will be regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods, crouch, bend, kneel, crawl, and twist. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, the ability to adjust focus, and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships. The employee must be able to hear, talk, and communicate verbally in person. Must be able to work in confined areas and occasionally at high altitudes. Frequent task changes, which use different aptitudes, techniques, technologies, working conditions, procedures, physical demands, and degrees of attentiveness without loss of efficiency or composure. EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Capability to efficiently operate a motor vehicle and/or heavy equipment up to 14 hours a day for several consecutive days in a row (such as snow removal).
