Description

Job Title: Structural Design Engineer (Junior Level)Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing structural engineering and consulting practice that delivers a full range of services, including structural design, forensic engineering, condition assessments, feasibility studies, and cost estimates for a diverse portfolio of public and private projects. As a junior-level structural design engineer, you will work closely with the firm's leadership, gain hands-on experience in both Building Information Modeling (BIM) and traditional CAD environments, and support projects such as administrative facilities, educational buildings, municipal structures, cultural centers, offices, airport terminals, utility buildings, and industrial facilities. You will help develop construction documents, perform structural analyses, and support the preparation of master plans and budget planning efforts while expanding your technical skills and professional growth in a collaborative, small-firm setting.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Autodesk Revit with a focus on structural engineering design to develop accurate and coordinated structural models.
  • Edit and manipulate Revit families and their parameters to meet project-specific requirements and standards.
  • Independently set up new structural projects in Revit, including linking external models, and extracting key model elements such as grid lines and project levels for use in the structural model.
  • Assist in the preparation of complete construction contract documents, including drawings, details, and reports for a variety of building types.
  • Support structural engineering analyses and design for projects of varying sizes and complexity, often working on several projects concurrently.
  • Perform structural calculations using company-standard software and tools to support design decisions for concrete, structural steel, and other materials.
  • Contribute to feasibility studies, condition assessments, and cost estimates by providing structural input and technical support.
  • Assist in the development of master plans and budget planning by supplying structural data and design considerations.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and other design professionals in a BIM environment, coordinating structural models with architectural and other discipline models.
  • Prepare and update drawings and details using Revit and, when required, traditional CAD tools such as AutoCAD.
  • Apply knowledge of structural analysis and design principles, including linear and non-linear dynamic modeling concepts as required by specific projects.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with team members, clients, and other stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and coordination sessions to ensure structural designs align with project goals and standards.
  • Support quality control efforts by reviewing models and drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Take on design tasks with oversight, progressively assuming greater responsibility as skills and experience grow.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency and hands-on experience working with Autodesk Revit, specifically for structural engineering design.
  • Ability to edit and manipulate Revit families and their parameters to align with project and office standards.
  • Capability to independently set up new Revit projects, link external models, and extract grid lines and project levels for structural use.
  • Experience in structural design and drafting, with approximately 4 years of experience in design-related roles.
  • Experience taking on design projects with oversight from senior engineers or project leads.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis and design principles, including the behavior of concrete and structural steel systems.
  • Familiarity with steel connectors and their representation in structural modeling.
  • Experience assisting in the preparation of construction contract documents, including plans and reports.
  • Experience assisting with structural engineering analyses and design for projects of various sizes while working on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to perform structural calculations using company-standard software.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with excellent English written and verbal abilities.
  • Experience with residential or commercial structural projects.
  • Proficiency with structural design and drafting tools, including Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Foundational knowledge of civil and structural engineering concepts relevant to building structures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a BIM environment and coordinating structural models with other disciplines.
  • Familiarity with traditional CAD workflows in addition to Revit-based modeling.
  • Exposure to structural analysis tools such as STAAD or similar software.
  • Experience contributing to feasibility studies, condition assessments, and cost estimates.
  • Interest in or exposure to linear and non-linear dynamic modeling of buildings and structures.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple concurrent projects.
  • Motivation to learn and grow in a small-firm environment with close collaboration and mentorship.
  • Comfort working directly with firm leadership and taking on increasing responsibility as skills develop.

Work Environment

The position primarily operates in an office environment with extensive use of computers and design software, requiring the ability to remain seated for extended periods while working in Revit, AutoCAD, and structural analysis tools. The role includes occasional site visits to project locations, which may involve exposure to outdoor elements and inclement weather. The firm offers a hybrid work arrangement, with occasional remote work flexibility provided once the candidate has demonstrated sufficient proficiency and reliability, and requires the candidate to be local to the Winchester, VA area to support in-office collaboration and site visits.
