POSITION SUMMARY
IES is seeking a licensed Structural Engineer to support the design, analysis, and field execution of modular data center projects. This role spans both office-based structural engineering and active project site involvement, requiring expertise in the structural systems that underpin mission-critical modular facilities. The ideal candidate brings technical depth in structural design for modular or prefabricated construction, practical field judgment, and the ability to collaborate closely with engineering, project management, and operations teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Structural Design and Analysis
- Perform structural analysis and design for modular data center facilities, including structural frames, foundations, floor systems, wall panels, and roof assemblies
- Develop and review structural drawings, specifications, and calculations for modular units and site infrastructure
- Prepare and stamp engineering documents as required by project specifications, permitting authorities, or clients
- Evaluate structural systems for load capacity, code compliance, and compatibility with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within modular builds
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable building codes, standards, and regulations, including IBC, ASCE 7, and local jurisdictional requirements
- Coordinate with project managers, estimators, mechanical and electrical engineers, and operations leadership during pre-construction and design phases
- Support value engineering efforts to optimize structural systems for cost, schedule, and constructability
Field and Project Support
- Conduct site visits to assess foundation and site conditions, verify structural installation compliance, and support field teams
- Provide technical guidance to field crews on structural requirements and assembly methods during construction and module installation
- Review and interpret field conditions and recommend design modifications as needed
- Participate in project kickoff meetings, progress reviews, and client-facing discussions
- Support structural commissioning, inspections, and project closeout activities
Compliance and Quality
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable structural codes, modular construction standards, and regulatory requirements
- Support quality assurance processes and ensure all structural deliverables meet company, client, and jurisdictional standards
- Identify and resolve technical issues that arise during design or field execution
Specific Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, required
- Minimum [X] years of structural engineering experience, preferably in modular construction, data centers, or mission-critical facilities
- Proficiency in structural analysis and design software (e.g., RISA, SAP2000, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Working knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, and other relevant structural codes and standards
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites and fabrication facilities as required
Preferred
- Experience with modular or prefabricated building structural systems
- Familiarity with data center design standards and mission-critical facility requirements
- SE (Structural Engineer) licensure in applicable states
- Experience with design-build project delivery in a contractor environment
- Familiarity with seismic design requirements and bracing systems for equipment and modular structures, including compliance with ASCE 7 seismic provisions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires a combination of office, fabrication facility, and field work. Assignments may involve exposure to active construction and manufacturing environments, outdoor conditions, and varying physical demands. Some travel is required.
