As part of the Water Design Centers Structural Group, the Structural Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the development of Structural Designs in support of various Water Business Line projects. Generally, this responsibility will include structural support as required for a variety of water and wastewater projects, but the majority of the expected assignments will be related to developing structural designs for new water and wastewater treatment plants or improvements to existing water and wastewater treatment facilities.
The required structural support shall include developing detailed drawings and specifications as needed for each project. This will consist of:
- Developing detailed structural designs for water and wastewater treatment process basins, chemical facilities, and administration buildings.
- Site retaining walls.
- Preparation of design calculations.
- Coordination with other support discipline activities.
- Coordination with regional offices and regulating agencies.
- Construction cost estimating.
- Quality assurance and control.
The Project Engineer will also assist the Group Leader in coordinating schedules, monitoring budgets, and ensuring delivery of quality work products which adhere to Garver standardization.
Qualified candidates must have the following capabilities and the ability to perform the following routine functions:
- Be technically competent in aspects of structural engineering.
- Work with a team of multi-disciplined civil, process, structural, mechanical, electrical, and I&C project engineers, design engineers, and CAD Technicians in the development of construction plans and specifications for water and wastewater treatment plant projects.
- Work on multiple projects concurrently.
- Assist in the development of project budgets, including the development of detailed project instructions, scope of work, level of effort, and associated man-hour estimates.
- Be responsible for time management and work product quality.
- Keep accurate and up-to-date project accounting on all assigned projects.
- Conduct written and oral project reporting for clients and team leader. Reporting will include project design status, upcoming milestones, project accounting, percent completes, progress reports, etc.
- Assist in the preparation and execution of Quality Assurance and Quality Control Plans for water and wastewater treatment projects.
- Assist with internal and external project workshops.
- Be responsible for continuing education and learning based on project needs as well as overall needs of the team.
Requirements
- Bachelors Degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- 1 year of technical experience in structural design engineering.
- Basic understanding of structural engineering design in concrete, masonry, and structural steel.
- EIT or ability to obtain a PE registration with 24 months.
Preferred Skills
- Masters Degree in civil or structural engineering.
- Registration as a SE or be willing to take the NCEES Structural Engineer exam within 2 years.
- Working knowledge of Revit CAD programs.
- Structural complexities associated with water and wastewater treatment equipment.
- Working with a multi-disciplinary team comprised of process, structural, building, mechanical, electrical, and Instrumentation and control disciplines.
- Active participation in local professional trade organizations.
The Project Engineer must have:
- A strong knowledge base of engineering principles including concrete, steel, and masonry design.
- Knowledge of the provisions of the International Building Code and its referenced material Codes is preferred.
- Strong technical problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Be self-motivated, enjoy team-oriented work, and have good oral and written communications.
- A basic understanding of the multi-discipline practices (i.e., process, surveying, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control) required for the implementation of infrastructure capital improvements.
- Strong communications skills as required to assist project teams and maintain internal client relationships.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook.
- Experience with AutoCad, Revit, or Microstation is preferred.
- A basic knowledge of finite element modeling using plates and frame elements.
Some travel may be required as projects may require field work for site assessment of project locations and support during construction.
