Job Title: Structural Engineer

Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to design and deliver structural solutions for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects, with a strong focus on energy, oil and gas, battery storage, and emerging technologies. You will primarily work on build-outs and retrofit renovations of existing facilities, including both building and non-building structures, rather than new ground-up construction. Depending on your years of experience, you will take on a mix of hands-on structural design, mentoring of junior staff, project management responsibilities, and limited travel to support ongoing construction projects. You will join a tight-knit, collaborative team that combines the feel of a small firm with the resources, multidisciplinary support, and project exposure of a larger organization, offering diverse work across growing energy markets and a strong emphasis on work-life balance and long-term career development.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis, design, and detailing for a wide range of commercial, institutional, and industrial projects, with an emphasis on energy-related facilities and non-traditional building types.
  • Design structural steel and reinforced concrete systems for both building and non-building structures, ensuring safe, efficient, and code-compliant solutions.
  • Develop foundation designs, including concrete spread footings (shallow foundations) and deep foundations such as driven steel piles and driven concrete piles.
  • Participate in every stage of the design process, from conceptual design and preliminary studies through detailed design, construction documents, and construction support.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, owners, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to produce coordinated, high-quality structural drawings and deliverables.
  • Work directly with designers, drafters, modelers, and other in-house engineers to execute structural designs and ensure accurate translation of engineering concepts into drawings and models.
  • Meet regularly with project teams to maintain effective communication, align on project goals, and resolve design issues in a timely manner.
  • Interface with contractors during construction to clarify design intent, address field questions, and help ensure successful project execution with minimal complications.
  • Support ongoing construction projects by reviewing submittals, responding to requests for information, and performing site visits as needed.
  • Take on project management responsibilities appropriate to your experience level, including managing schedules, coordinating resources, and contributing to profitable project delivery.
  • Mentor and support lower level engineering staff by reviewing their work, providing technical guidance, and sharing best practices in structural design and analysis.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team culture by actively participating in internal design reviews, knowledge sharing, and cross-discipline coordination.
  • Engage in limited travel as needed to project sites, client meetings, or other offices to support project and team needs.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, architectural engineering, or a closely related structural engineering field.
  • 5-12 years of structural engineering experience, with consideration for strong candidates with approximately 4 years of experience.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE), or eligibility and a strong track record as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with 4-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated design experience with structural steel and reinforced concrete for both building and non-building structures.
  • Strong experience designing foundations, including concrete spread footings (shallow foundations) and deep foundations such as driven steel piles and driven concrete piles.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software and the ability to apply it effectively to complex industrial and energy-related structures.
  • Relevant project experience in heavy industrial sectors such as oil and gas, hydrogen, mining, energy, or water and wastewater facilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, owners, contractors, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to clearly convey design intent and coordinate with project stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage portions of projects, maintain schedules, and contribute to profitable project delivery.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master's degree in civil engineering, architectural engineering, or a related structural engineering field.
  • Design experience in oil and gas, hydrogen, alternative energy, or other emerging energy technologies.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software such as RISA-3D, ETABS, or comparable tools, with the ability to learn new platforms as needed.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit for developing and coordinating structural drawings and models.
  • Background in heavy industrial facilities, including complex equipment foundations and non-traditional building structures.
  • Interest in mentoring junior engineers and contributing to a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in preparing calculations, drawings, and documentation.
  • Motivation to build a long-term career within a multidisciplinary engineering environment that offers diverse project exposure and growth opportunities.

Work Environment

You will work as part of a tight-knit, collaborative structural team of approximately 30 people, supported by a larger multidisciplinary organization with hundreds of employees and multiple offices across the United States and overseas. The environment combines a small-firm feel with access to broad resources, specialized disciplines, and complex, high-profile projects. The team focuses heavily on energy markets, including oil and gas, hydrogen, storage, and alternative energy, as well as industrial and institutional facilities. For the first six months, you will primarily work in the office to build strong relationships, integrate with the team, and become familiar with systems and processes; after this period, you will work with your manager to develop a flexible schedule that supports both project needs and work-life balance. You will use modern structural analysis and design software, as well as CAD and BIM tools, while collaborating closely with other engineering disciplines, corrosion control specialists, commissioning professionals, and project/construction management teams. The organization emphasizes a supportive culture, long-term career development, and recognition in the industry, as reflected by multiple rankings and awards as a top engineering firm and a great place to work.
