Structural Fitter Trainer (Shipbuilding)

Position Overview

HTI is seeking a Structural Fitter Trainer to support a leading shipbuilding operation in the Charleston area. This role is responsible for training and developing structural fitters in a high-volume production environment, ensuring employees are proficient in shipfitting techniques, safety standards, and quality requirements.

This is a hands-on training role, ideal for a senior structural fitter, lead, or supervisor who is ready to transition into training or has prior instructor experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver hands-on and classroom training in structural fitting and ship assembly
  • Instruct on:
    • Layout and fit-up of structural components
    • Reading and interpreting shipyard blueprints and technical drawings
    • Use of tools such as torches, grinders, measuring devices, and alignment equipment
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans, training materials, and job aids
  • Train employees on shipyard safety procedures, quality standards, and production processes
  • Evaluate trainee performance through practical demonstrations and assessments
  • Track and maintain training records and certifications
  • Partner with production supervisors to address skill gaps and workforce development needs
  • Provide on-the-floor coaching to reinforce best practices and efficiency
  • Continuously improve training programs based on feedback and production outcomes
Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One of the following:
    • 7+ years of structural fitting / shipfitting experience, OR
    • Apprenticeship or Associate's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong experience with:
    • Structural fitting, layout, and alignment
    • Blueprint reading and interpretation
    • Shipyard or heavy industrial fabrication environments
  • Ability to effectively teach and communicate technical concepts
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on, production-driven environment
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a trainer, instructor, or crew lead
  • Experience in shipbuilding, naval, or heavy steel fabrication environments
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA standards or similar quality systems
  • Experience developing or delivering formal training programs
  • Relevant trade certifications (NCCER or equivalent)
Work Environment

  • Industrial/shipyard setting with exposure to:
    • Heavy equipment and machinery
    • Outdoor conditions and confined spaces
    • Noise, heat, and physically demanding work
  • Requires ability to stand, walk, and perform hands-on demonstrations regularly
