Structural Project Engineer –Bridges
Location: Austin, TX (Multiple Texas locations available)
Position Summary
The Structural Project Engineer –Bridges will lead the design, inspection, analysis, and rehabilitation of bridge and transportation infrastructure projects. This position is responsible for managing small to mid-sized bridge projects, contributing to larger multidisciplinary projects, and providing technical expertise related to bridge performance, load ratings, structural rehabilitation, and inspection activities.
The ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer with experience in bridge design and inspection who is passionate about delivering safe, high-quality transportation infrastructure while mentoring junior engineering staff.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the structural analysis, inspection review, and design of bridges and transportation structures.
  • Perform and review routine bridge safety inspections in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Conduct structural analysis, bridge load ratings, and rehabilitation design for bridge systems and components.
  • Evaluate bridge inspection reports, condition ratings, and historical data to support engineering recommendations.
  • Prepare engineering reports, cost estimates, construction plans, and technical documentation.
  • Conduct site visits and field observations to assess bridge conditions and monitor construction progress.
  • Coordinate with engineers, inspectors, technicians, contractors, and project stakeholders throughout project execution.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) standards.
  • Independently prepare and seal engineering work products in accordance with state licensing requirements.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to Graduate Engineers, Project Engineers, and engineering support staff.
  • Support bridge asset management initiatives and long-term infrastructure planning.
  • Assist with project scheduling, coordination, staffing, and resource planning.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive understanding of bridge structural systems, including superstructures, substructures, foundations, and lateral load-resisting systems.
  • Strong knowledge of bridge inspection standards and procedures.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO bridge design specifications and applicable bridge design manuals.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis methods, bridge design software, and CAD/BIM platforms.
  • Understanding of bridge load rating methodologies, rehabilitation strategies, and maintenance planning.
  • Familiarity with transportation agency bridge standards and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of bridge scour evaluations and scour mitigation practices.
  • Understanding of traffic control standards applicable to bridge inspection and construction activities.
Skills

Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of structural or bridge engineering experience.
  • At least 6 months of National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) bridge inspection experience.
  • Bridge inspection experience within Texas is preferred.
  • Bridge design experience is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.).
  • Experience performing bridge load ratings, rehabilitation planning, and QA/QC reviews.
  • Experience preparing engineering recommendations for critical bridge findings and maintenance actions.
  • Previous supervisory or mentoring experience is a plus.
Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Texas or the ability to obtain Texas licensure within six months of hire.
  • Successful completion of an FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course (or equivalent).
