Description

Structural Steel Welder, Transmission & Distribution Fabrication

You clock in at 2:45 pm and step onto the fabrication floor. A fresh set of blueprints waits at your station—today’s build is a structural steel assembly destined for a power transmission system. You lay out parts, check every dimension, and align components in jigs. The arc strikes, and you run full-penetration welds on slip joints with clean technique. Between passes, you grind, verify fit-up, and document progress. By shift end at 12:45 am, your welds are UT-ready and your records are complete.

What you’ll do

  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, layouts, and work orders to build structural steel products for transmission and distribution applications.
  • Lay out, align, and position components in jigs/fixtures using precise measuring tools; mark weld locations on parts and subassemblies.
  • Execute full-penetration welds (including slip joints) on poles and channels with a focus on quality and repeatability.
  • Operate grinders and related tools; perform basic equipment and material repairs as needed.
  • Inspect finished welds to ensure they meet specifications; maintain at least a 90% pass rate on ultrasonic (UT) inspections.
  • Achieve and maintain qualification as a flat welder.
  • Complete production and inspection records accurately and on time.
  • Follow all standard safety procedures and protocols; perform additional tasks as assigned.

What you bring

  • 3–5 years of welding experience OR completion of formal welding education/training.
  • Strong preference for experience with Flux-Cored, Metal-Cored, and Shielded Metal Arc (stick) welding.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement and tight tolerances.
  • Ability to read complex blueprints and schematics.
  • Background in manufacturing transmission poles or similar structural products is a plus.
  • Consistent, reliable attendance and a quality-first mindset.

  • $23.00–$30.00 per hour, DOE
