Student Archaeology Research Assistant

Job Summary:

This position contributes to ongoing archaeological and bioarchaeological research projects in Kenya led by the Museum's Curator of Human Evolution Dr. Elizabeth Sawchuk. The research assistant will convert archaeological photographs, drawings, and excavation profiles into usable digital formats such as figures and maps to illustrate findings from recent digs. The main work will involve using Adobe Suite or similar software to digitally trace drawings of archaeological features (specifically cairns and burial mounds) and layer these images into accurate composite images. Other tasks include digitizing hand-drawn profiles, organizing fieldwork photos and files, and participating in team meetings with collaborators. The goal of this project is to produce high quality and accessible figures, models, and maps for diverse community outreach, science communication, and academic research purposes. There is also potential for the student to creatively work with GIS datasets and 3D photogrammetry models if interested. All necessary software licenses will be provided.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in archaeology/bioarchaeology and previous research experience, the ability to work independently and in a team, strong oral and written communication skills, and proficiency with Adobe and Google Suites. They should display good judgment and discretion when working with sensitive materials, and be willing to work with images of archaeological human remains. Previous experience with digital and graphic design is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Review archaeological records, data, and publications from relevant projects and participate in meetings with collaborators
• Manage a Google Drive for existing and newly created digital files
• Use Adobe Suite and other software as needed to process images and create high resolution figures and maps in consultation with research team
• Regularly report progress and liaise with supervisor and team members
• Create science communication content to disseminate findings and engage with community partners in the future.

Education and Experience

Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program with some independent research experience and knowledge of graphic design

• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
• Strong attention to detail
• Experience with Microsoft, Google and Adobe (or equivalent) applications
• Effective oral and written communication skills

Working Conditions

This position will conduct indoor research activities that may occasionally require physical effort. This position may require sitting, walking, standing, and reaching including stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Must be able to perform the essential functions of this role with or without reasonable accommodation.
