Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a student to assist The Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation Wee Care Center as a teacher assistant! Come hang out and play and learn alongside the youngest wolverines on campus. We get to play with playdough, run outside, have events, eat snacks, and learn and explore the world together. You will also gain training and experience in working with young children and gain skills that will help you in your personal and professional life for years to come.

Availability Requirements:

Must be available to work a consistent weekly schedule during one of the following shifts:

  • Morning Shift: 7:15 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • Afternoon Shift: 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Applicants must be able to commit to a regular schedule of 2-5 weekdays per week (for example, Tuesday/Thursday, Monday/Wednesday/Friday, or Monday-Thursday) and maintain the same schedule throughout the semester. Some flexibility in start and end times may be available based on program needs.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, nurturing environment where every child can learn, explore and thrive.
  • Become familiar with and help adhere to high standards of quality care in alignment with National Association of Educating Young Children (NAEYC).
  • Assist teachers with implementation of research-based curriculum and assessments.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with children, families, coworkers, regulating authorities, University personnel, and community partners.
  • Part time employees can work up to 28 hours per week.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

  • Must be a current UVU student
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain
  • Food Handlers Certification or willingness to obtain
  • Pass a criminal background check through the Utah Department of Health

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Knowledge or training of developmentally appropriate practices for working with young children.
  • Ability to engage children in leaning and play activities.
  • Ability to supervise multiple children in demanding, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain positive and professional demeanor
  • Ability to follow oral and written procedures and instructions
  • Reliable, punctual and committed to keeping assigned schedule

Utah Valley University was established in 1941 as Central Utah Vocational School (CUVS) with the primary function of providing war production training. CUVS was part of the Provo School District located in south Provo. The institution received a state appropriation in March 1945 of $50,000 to operate for the 1945-1947 biennium. In 1947, the school received funding as a permanent state institution. A new site for the school was acquired on University Avenue in Provo in 1948; in the 1952, the state appropriated funding for the first construction on that site. As enrollments grew, the state acquired over 185 acres in southwest Orem and the first building was completed in 1977. Today, the University’s facilities consist of a combined total of 412 acres with 50 buildings with campuses in Orem, Provo, and Heber City and property in Vineyard and at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi.
