Job Summary

This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity for a current student to gain valuable work experience while contributing to the success of Lake Sumter State College. The Student Assistant will provide essential support, working closely with faculty and staff to ensure efficient operation of departmental activities.

This is a part-time position with an expected commitment not to exceed 25 hours per week. The schedule will be flexible to accommodate the students academic and other responsibilities.

Responsible for demonstrating LSSCs values of Caring, Communicating, Collaborating, and Celebrating.Students cannot work during class meeting times.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lab Organization &Housekeeping

  • Organize laboratory storage areas, prep rooms, and stockrooms

  • Sort, label, and properly store supplies, chemicals (non-hazardous), and equipment

  • Remove outdated, damaged, or unnecessary materials as directed

  • Maintain the cleanliness of lab spaces, including benches, cabinets, and common areas

  • Assist with periodic lab clean-outs and reorganization projects

  • Assist faculty during lab sessions and demonstrations

  • Inventory Support

  • Unpack, inspect, and store incoming shipments and supplies

  • Assist with stocking shelves and maintaining inventory levels

  • Label and categorize materials according to established systems

  • Notify supervisor of low supplies or discrepancies in orders

  • Equipment Handling

  • Clean and store glassware, instruments, and lab equipment

  • Assist with basic setup and breakdown of lab materials (non-technical)

  • Ensure equipment is returned to proper storage locations

  • Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment

  • Waste & Material Management

  • Assisting in sorting materials for disposal, recycling, or storage

  • Remove non-hazardous waste and packaging materials

  • Support lab staff with preparation for hazardous waste pickup (under supervision)

  • General Support

  • Assist laboratory technician with routine operational tasks

  • Help maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient lab environment

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support lab operations
