ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
Career Services empowers Shawnee State University students and alumni throughout their college experience and professional journeys by providing resources, guidance, and opportunities that foster career exploration, career readiness, and professional success.
Services include career and major exploration, résumé and cover letter development, interview preparation, job and internship searches, career assessments, graduate school planning, employer networking, career fairs, experiential learning opportunities, professional attire through the Bear Wear Closet, professional headshots, and other career-related resources.
Career Services also partners with faculty, staff, employers, alumni, and community organizations to advance career readiness, workforce development, experiential learning, and student success across campus. Student employees are an integral part of the office, supporting daily operations while developing transferable skills that prepare them for future careers and graduate education.
POSITION SUMMARY, ROUTINE TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Career Services Student Employees serve as Peer Career Staff, contributing to daily office operations, student engagement, event support, and career development initiatives. Student employees receive ongoing training and mentorship while gaining hands-on experience. Working in Career Services provides opportunities to develop professional competencies, build transferable skills, and help fellow Bears prepare for success during college and beyond.
Responsibilities may include:
- Welcome students, alumni, employers, faculty, staff, and campus guests while providing exceptional customer service.
- Open and close the office, answer phones, schedule appointments, and assist with general office operations.
- Assist students and alumni in navigating Career Services resources and connecting with career development services under staff guidance.
- Prepare career-related materials and promote jobs, internships, workshops, career fairs, employer events, and other Career Services opportunities through Handshake, social media, email, and campus outreach.
- Assist with workshops, classroom presentations, career fairs, employer engagement activities, and other university programs.
- Support the Professional Headshot Booth, Bear Wear Closet, and other Career Services resources.
- Create marketing materials and assist with outreach initiatives, special projects, and event preparation.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
- Represent Career Services as a positive ambassador for the department and Shawnee State University.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when interacting with students, alumni, employers, faculty, staff, and campus guests.
- Willingness to learn Career Services technologies and resources, including Handshake, Hiration, Focus 2 Career, What Can I Do With This Major?, Canva, and other career development platforms.
- Comfortable assisting with presentations, workshops, career fairs, employer events, and other campus programs.
- Some lifting, moving materials, and event setup or cleanup may be required.
- Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required to support Orientation, Showcase Days, Weekend of Welcome, career fairs, employer events, and other university programming.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Registered full-time SSU student
- Eligible to work in the United States
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and follow instructions
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and social media platforms
- Follow SSU dress code policy
