Job Description Summary

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Fine, Digital & Performing Arts (FDPA) Department at Shawnee State University supports academic programs and activities in the visual and performing arts. The department serves students, faculty, staff, and visitors through classes, studios, performances, exhibitions, special events, and day-to-day departmental operations. The student employee will assist the department with routine office, studio, gallery, and event-related needs while gaining practical work experience in a professional university environment.

POSITION SUMMARY, ROUTINE TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The FDPA Student Worker provides flexible support across Fine, Digital & Performing Arts. Student employees may be assigned to one or more areas based on their skills, interests, class schedule, and departmental needs. Assignments may include:

OFFICE / DEPARTMENT SUPPORT

  • Provide coverage of the department office; greet students, faculty, staff, and visitors and provide general information.
  • Receive and route telephone calls and assist with routine customer service.
  • Assist with copying, scanning, filing, sorting, data entry, and organizing departmental records and materials.
  • Assist with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other basic office technology.
  • Run campus errands; sort, deliver, or distribute departmental materials and mail.
  • Help maintain bulletin boards, signs, flyers, and other department communications.

CERAMICS / ART STUDIO SUPPORT

  • Assist faculty with setting up, maintaining, organizing, and cleaning ceramics and art studio work areas and equipment as directed.
  • Organize, label, inventory, and distribute studio supplies, tools, and materials.
  • Assist with preparing studio spaces for classes and resetting work areas afterward.
  • Help maintain orderly and safe studio work areas and follow all University and studio safety procedures.

GAMING / DIGITAL STUDIO SUPPORT

  • Assist with the operation, setup, organization, and basic troubleshooting of computers, audiovisual equipment, gaming equipment, and other electronic equipment used by the department.
  • Assist with maintaining an inventory of technology and studio equipment.
  • Help prepare gaming and digital studio spaces for classes, demonstrations, projects, or events.
  • Assist faculty and staff with basic technology-related projects and instructional materials as assigned.

THEATRE / PERFORMANCE SUPPORT

  • Assist with theatre, performance, rehearsal, and event setup and reset.
  • Help arrange or move approved equipment, tables, chairs, props, signs, and other materials as directed.
  • Assist with checking, organizing, and maintaining theatre or event equipment and supplies.
  • Help maintain the appearance and organization of performance, backstage, storage, and public areas.
  • Some assignments may include evening or weekend performances, rehearsals, or special events.

APPLETON GALLERY / EXHIBITION SUPPORT

  • Assist with preparing the Appleton Gallery and other exhibition spaces for exhibits, receptions, and special events.
  • Assist with installation and removal of artwork, labels, signage, displays, and exhibition materials under faculty/staff supervision.
  • Help maintain the organization and appearance of gallery and exhibition spaces.
  • Assist with receptions, registrations, event setup and cleanup, and greeting visitors.
  • Assist with promotional materials, including distributing or displaying flyers, posters, and other approved publicity materials.

ALL ASSIGNMENTS

  • Must maintain confidentiality when working with departmental information or records.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills are important.
  • Depending on assignment, audiovisual, computer troubleshooting, graphic arts, photography, inventory, studio, gallery, theatre, or event experience may be helpful but is not required for every student worker.
  • Some assignments require standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting or moving supplies, artwork, equipment, props, or small furniture.
  • Students assigned to studios, theatre, gallery installation, or equipment-related work must follow all University and departmental safety practices and faculty/staff instructions.
  • Work schedules are arranged around the students classes and departmental needs.
  • Depending on assignment, work may occur in the department office, ceramics/art studios, gaming/digital studios, Appleton Gallery, theatre/performance spaces, classrooms, storage areas, or other campus locations.
  • Some gallery, theatre, performance, exhibition, or special-event assignments may require evening or weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered full-time SSU student
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and follow instructions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and social media platforms
  • Follow SSU dress code policy

This position is not eligible for benefits.
